Interview with Cooper

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Most recently I co-produced a song for NBA Youngboy called "Akbar". It's been extremely exciting to read all the tweets about the song and see reactions to the videos on Youtube. I love to know that my music is impacting people's lives in some way.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I have been working with a lot of up and coming talents (singers and rappers). I try to help in any ways I can. I've also been enjoying working in and providing music for television shows – and diving more into sound design, as there's always a need for sound.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love the fact that I can help bring something to life. From a small idea to a full song.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: "Can you make a track like this?". My answer always is, I take into consideration the inspiration and desire to sound like a certain track, but I will always mesh a quality and unique sound with it. People come to me for this particular ability.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: People who are really good at just about anything, make it look easy. But it takes thousands of hours of practice and some God given talent to make it look (in my case, sound) like it was easy. Listening for hours, tweaking down to milliseconds. It takes many many hours to train the ear and be able to create just the right sounds, in just the right way.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What type of feelings are you trying to convey with this project or song? Are there any inspirations you would like me to draw from and mix into what you are trying to do? What elements from them do you love the most?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: The more detail you can provide me with, the better. As long as I know what I'm shooting for, I'll deliver something you can feel good about.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Sonically my sound is a precise blend of warm and clean. My style is heartfelt and soulful.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: My top 2 would have to be Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean. I think they're geniuses and constantly pushing music boundaries – which help it evolve, in what I think is a positive direction.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My main set up consists of an Apple MacPro

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A Macbook Pro with unlimited battery LOL, an upright piano, some big Genelec speakers, a drum kit and a midi keyboard.

  23. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  24. A: Most recently I co-produced a song for NBA Youngboy called "Akbar". It's been extremely exciting to read all the tweets about the song and see reactions videos on Youtube. I love to know that my music is impacting people's lives in some way.

  25. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  26. A: I have been working with a lot of up and coming talents(singers and rappers), trying to provide and help in any ways I can. I've also been enjoying working in providing music for television shows and diving more into sound design, as there's always a need for sound.

  27. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  28. A: Without a doubt Mickey Shiloh. She's a great songwriter and a complete professional.

  29. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  30. A: I love the fact that I can help bring to life something out of thin air. From a small idea to a full song.

  31. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  32. A: "Can you make a track like this?". My answer always is, I take into consideration the inspiration and desire to sound like a certain track, but I will always mesh my sound with it. Never the less, I always provide satisfactory work.

  33. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  34. A: I often feel producers aren't often as valued as I would like. A lot of time and effort goes into producing if you're doing it on a professional level. Listening for hours, tweaking down to milliseconds. It takes many many hours to train the ear and be able to do so.

  35. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  36. A: What type of feelings are you trying to convey with this project or song? Are there any inspirations you would like to draw from and mix? What elements from them do you love the most?

  37. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  38. A: All I ask for is a detailed description of what you're looking for. As long as I know what I'm shooting for, I'm confident I can deliver.

  39. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  40. A: I started creating music when I was 8, and received my first professional check when I was 15. I am well over 10,000 hours into my craft.

  41. Q: How would you describe your style?

  42. A: Sonically I would say, the perfect mixture of warm and clean. To describe the feeling of my style, I would have to say soulful and heartfelt.

  43. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  44. A: I can't choose. My top 2 would have to be Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean. I think they're geniuses and constantly pushing boundaries and helping the culture evolve.

  45. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  46. A: My main set up consists of an Apple MacPro

  47. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  48. A: Timeless work, along with professional and TIMELY communication.

  49. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  50. A: My forte is R&B, Hip Hop & Pop, but I pride myself in being versatile.

  51. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  52. A: I receive the most compliments on my drum work and chord progressions.

  53. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  54. A: I bring a polished soulfulness to a song. My work is something you can feel.

  55. Q: What's your typical work process?

  56. A: Clients mostly come to me with an idea that I then capture musically, run by them to see that I'm on the right track, and then build on. Sometimes my clients want a full production with mixing, sometimes it is just making a beat. Occasionally someone has a project they just need me to program drums on.

  57. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  58. A: Full song production is the most common work I do. Sometimes I'm asked to provide drum programming, for artists who have a certain drum sound in mind for their song, but they are having a hard time achieving.

  59. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  60. A: Paul McCartney, Rick Rubin, Timbaland, Scott Storch, Pharrell, Prince, D'Angelo.

  61. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  62. A: Both. It's a digital age, but the combination sets you apart.

  63. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  64. A: Groove is EVERYTHING!
