Interview with Todd M. Simon
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I love to get inside the music before I start recording. I will never track an idea unless I feel it is right.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: It's a modified analog/digital setup bridging Universal Audio's Apollo system with AEA ribbon microphones, vintage Phillips dynamic mics and some classic outboard gear such as the Orban 111b. I have different rooms in my home that have varying acoustics to achieve that super dry sound all the way to a big/spacious room.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Quincy Jones is the G.O.A.T.! I am inspired by highly (overly) motivated music makers such as Danny Elfman, Hugh Masekela, Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), Burt Bacharach and Charles Stepney.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Recording horns and creating arrangements for music of all genres. I like to take the extra time to get live instrumentation sounding just right to fit the appropriate era. Many Hip-Hop producers and film composers reach out to me because I can re-create almost any sound.
