Lyrics provide a roadmap through the music of a song. They can also be incredibly tricky to get right. The best songs strike a balance between the personal and the universal, and utilize techniques like rhyme, imagery, confession, description, assonance, syncopation, and other tricks to create a memorable sonic impression.
If you find lyric writing difficult, you’re not alone! Even Lennon and McCartney wrote their best work in collaboration. Sometimes, we need a little help from our friends to find the right phrase or image. That’s where I’d love to help. I have a passion for words, poetry, and the music of language. In addition to having published several books of poetry, I’m also a Professor who teaches Creative Writing and a singer-songwriter who practices the craft of songwriting consistently.
