Interview with Alex PGSV
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I produced, composed, and mastered the music used in LA Times' newest podcast "Foretold". We just recently got nominated for an award by the International Documentary Association, which is pretty cool.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a lot of solo stuff. "Alex PGSV" on all platforms :)
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog. You just can't beat the real thing.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: 100% satisfaction. I want them to love the work as much as I do, and I do unlimited revisions. I will keep working, and will start from scratch, or apply a new way of producing or mixing to get the final result perfect!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that I'm able to use what I can do to help people and give their ideas life. Music is the most important thing in the world and I'm lucky to be surrounded by it every single day.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: If I can produce or mix their next track. Of course I can!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about their musical background, as well as artists & songs they love. It's important to know who you're working with and what their vision is.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Take your work seriously and do it with love. I love working with artists that have passion for their work.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 5 different Moog synths. It's that simple.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been classically trained on piano since 5 years old. Since then, I've picked up guitar, drums, vocals, production, mixing, mastering, DJing and anything else you could ever think of. I now work as a composer for LA Times and I also engineer / produce at several studios in Charlotte, NC.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Melodic, groovy, and beautiful with a hint of haunted nostalgia. Something special that stands out from everyone else.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Travis Scott, he's one of my biggest influences. I actually met him outside of the Ritz in Charlotte, NC and played him some of my beats. He was so nice and down to earth, I can't wait to work with him someday.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never say no.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work in ALL genres, but my main ones are Hip hop, Pop, R&B, Lo-fi, and Soul.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: It would have to be my passion and experience. Loving what you do is the most important thing in this world.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an eclectic mix of melodic and modern flavor. Something new and exciting.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I always like to mix things up, however I do have a solid foundation. I start off by listening to the song / references and feel out the vibe. I then make internal notes on what I can do and how I feel I can bring the track to the next level. I want to add my flavor while still keeping the original artist's vision.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a lot of toys and equipment that I use for my work. If you're ever in Charlotte, stop by the studio and see for yourself!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mike Dean is a big one, I've been a fan of his production since I first heard it. I'm also heavily inspired by the sounds of Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder, The Cars, Kid Cudi, and Frank Ocean. Bill Evans is my all time favorite pianist.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Production, Mixing, Mastering, Piano and Co-Production work. I have many clients that want a mix and master at first, but then I assist them with additional production to take their tracks to the next level. I also offer studio time at my recording studio in Charlotte, NC.
