Interview with Waifuture

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am still producing the soundtrack but Studio Kumiho's Cricket (JRPG), has some of my best work in video game music.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I have a video game contract, I'm helping out a few friends with their games, and I have my passion project - Waifuture.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Ashley. I work with her all the time and she is an incredible melody writer, lyricist, and vocalist.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. It's the way of the future.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You will sound unique.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love the process of making music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you make this? Yes.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: What I do is quite clear but some of my decisions may affect people differently but I am always open to feedback.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you want your audience to feel? Do I hit them hard or gently?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Provide all necessary details and be open to surprises. Don't talk too much and we'll make magic happen!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Almost my entire studio! Mouse, Keyboard, MIDI keyboard, Headphones, and a laptop.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've worked in Information Technology successfully for 3 years but have been making music for over 14. I have only recently started to put in deliberate hours into my work, but it has yielded great results. I come from pretty crazy musical background filled with all kinds of colors and phases but I do not regret anything even as painful or stupid my past was.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My friends have told me that I definitely have a "Shane Mesa" style. That is my real name. I don't know how to describe my own style but i know that it is original in it's own way based on the feedback I have received from others.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Flume. He creates extraordinary sounds using simple techniques. I would love to discuss musical perspectives with him.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always question whether something in your mix is necessary.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I produce a vast spectrum of genres and sounds due to the nature of large video game projects (such as RPGs) but I love to produce Hip-Hop and Indie Pop music as a passion.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I never run out of ideas and will always work through obstacles to produce an interesting concept.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a new perspective on music with a unique production and arrangement style. If you want something typical or predictable, you may not be asking the right person.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I have a lot of talented friends I work with to help my music to sound better but I typically work extremely fast. I start with a chord progression or designing some sounds. I create a rough mix, bounce all tracks to a new session for (sometimes heavy) editing, and finally mix the project. I add vocals after the instrumental has been mixed. Then, I finally master the record.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My Studio is minimal and effective. I own at top-of-the-line MacBook Pro connected to 4K dual monitors on a sit/stand VersaDesk. I create music in Ableton Live 11 with a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88, an Apollo Solo, Neumann NDH20 studio headphones, and a SM7B microphone.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Flume is my sound design influence but I find most of my inspiration from my friends and real life experiences.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mainly produce colorful video game music but my experience has lead me to explore Pop and Hip-Hop music as well.
