Interview with Shane Mesa
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I have a video game contract, I'm helping out a few friends with their games, and I have my Digital Fusion passion project as well.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog. It's the way of the future!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've worked in Information Technology successfully for 3 years but have been making music for over 15. I have only recently started to put in deliberate hours into my work, but it has yielded great results. I come from pretty crazy musical background filled with all kinds of colors and phases but I do not regret anything even as painful or silly my past was.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I produce a vast spectrum of genres and sounds due to the nature of large video game projects (such as RPGs) but I love to produce other types of music, too.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I have a lot of talented friends I work with to help my music to sound better but I typically work extremely fast. I start with a chord progression or lread with a melody. I create a rough mix, bounce all tracks to a new session for (sometimes heavy) editing, and finally mix the project. I add vocals after the instrumental has been mixed. Then, I finally master the record.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My Studio is minimal and effective. I own at top-of-the-line MacBook Pro connected to 4K dual monitors on a sit/stand VersaDesk. I create music in FL Studio 21 with a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88, an Apollo Solo, Neumann NDH20 studio headphones, and a SM7B microphone.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly produce colorful video game music but my experience has lead me to explore other genres as well.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I reproduced a Japanese '80s Pop song called "Lady Sunshine" with original English lyrics and I think it slaps!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Provide all necessary details and be open to surprises. We'll make magic happen!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Ashley. I work with her all the time and she is an incredible melody writer, lyricist, and vocalist.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You will sound unique.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the entire process of creating music.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you make this? Yes.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: What I do is quite clear but some of my decisions may affect people differently but I am always open to feedback.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want your audience to feel? Do I hit them hard or gently?
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Flume is my sound design influence but I find most of my inspiration from my friends and real life experiences.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Almost my entire studio! Mouse, Keyboard, MIDI keyboard, Headphones, and a laptop.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My friends have told me that I definitely have a "Shane Mesa" style. That is my real name. I don't know how to describe my own style but i know that it is original in it's own way based on the feedback I have received from others.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I never run out of ideas and will always work through obstacles to produce an interesting concept.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a new perspective on music with a unique production and arrangement style. If you want something typical or predictable, you may not be asking the right person.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Flume. He creates extraordinary sounds using simple techniques. I would love to discuss musical perspectives with him.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always question whether something in your mix is necessary.
