Working with Josh was an outstanding experience! He is not only 100% professional but also incredibly flexible and open to any changes I wanted to make to my song. His communication skills were exceptional, making the entire process of getting my song mixed smooth and stress-free. Highly recommend!

Working with Josh is a dream, he put so much care and patience into each and every song we worked on together. He made sure to keep me updated every step of the way, and made me feel very at ease knowing someone so capable and involved was at the wheel. He really brought my music to life, despite being constrained to such a short turnaround time, and made the process smooth and easy. His ear and attention to detail are always welcome, I look forward to working with Josh in the future!

Josh is GREAT at what he does! I record with a LOT of vocal tracks and am very particular about how things sound. He was very communicative, patient, and made the process so smooth. He didn’t make me feel bad for asking questions or for the little tweaks and details I brought to him. The mix sounds AMAZING and I HIGHLY recommend his services!

It was great working with Josh on my project! I appreciate how patient he was with all of my revision requests and how quickly he was able to get it done. He was super receptive to feedback and ended up delivering amazing mixes. The only point of feedback I’d give is I wish he were more communicative when it comes to sharing his thoughts on what I could do/add to make the songs go from “good” to “great”.

Interview with Josh Florez
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Rosalia, Anomalie, Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, Brian McKnight, Bruce Swedien
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: 2022 has been a level up year for me. I recently did a week long Masterclass in studio with Josh Gudwin (Engineer/Mixer to Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa and more.) I learned so much from this experience and have been able to bring more value and professionalism to my own clients. I also, recently finished a writing/production camp with BMG Production Music and Paramount the streaming network. My collaborators and I ended up turning in 4 songs to the camp and are excited to see what opportunities can potentially follow. I'm currently finishing up a certification course for Dolby Atmos. Atmos/Spacial audio is an immersive way to experience music. Where instead of a Left and Right speaker - you are truly surrounded by sound coming from all directions. This format has taken streaming platforms by storm and seems to be the way of the future. I'm excited to be offering this service here on SoundBetter. Simultaneously, I'm stepping into a very exciting album that will carry me through the rest of the year.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Aditya - Has been assisting me for 2 years now. He's my right hand man on each and every project. He's a great mixer and a hell of a producer. https://soundbetter.com/profiles/341971-aditya
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I love both - Particularly, I like to record with analog gear on the vocal chain etc. But mixing In The Box gives me a flexibility where I can work efficiently and w precision for my clients.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That it doesn't feel like a job! I choose my own hours and get to meet amazing people everyday.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "Can the song be louder?" My answer is YES, of course. But we will loose dynamics and life in the record AND the streaming platforms are going to bring the volume down on our song if it is coming in too loud.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: This isn't Postmates. I'm a real human just like you, and the key to hitting your vision is strong communication and patience. We might not hit your exact vision on the first pass - but that's ok. We can talk it out and make adjustments. Also, if production or vocal performance isn't good, the mix simply won't be good. The song is the cake, and the mix is the frosting on top. Know this: 1. Music takes time, and luckily we have lots of it! 2. I'm the most patient person you will EVER meet.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you LIKE and DISLIKE about your rough mix? Do you have any references I can keep in mind while working on your song?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I work best when there's a true vision of your song. With no direction I will definitely get lost. Spending quality time on your rough mix is key as this will be my blueprint. Don't be scared to ask questions. I'm here to help and I speak artist! I'm so inspired by artists who invest in their craft. It's a true honor to be trusted with others art.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Midi Keyboard, Coffee, My Wife and Nintendo Switch
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I studied Recording Engineering at Full Sail University and moved to Los Angeles 10 years ago. I've interned at various studios and earned my stripes. Today I operate completely as a freelance Mix Engineer & Producer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Commutative, easygoing, open-minded, and meticulous.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Justin Timberlake. His voice is insane and he's created an inspiring balance of music/film/and life. He's not always putting out music... but when he does... It's killer stuff!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Take a walk. Whenever I get stuck on a song a nice walk helps me reset and come back with a fresh perspective.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: R&B, Reggaeton, Pop, Dance, Hip-Hop, Christian, Trap, Country
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: This always depends on the client, deadlines and etc. But first, I like to get all details possible about the project and then I will make an assumption about the turn around. I hit the studio everyday at 8 am - I have fun and create the first half of the day and then do mixing or production work for the second half.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have my own mix room at Chalice Recording Studios. I have access to a great mic locker with tons of vintage and high quality gear.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing, Mastering & Music Production
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently did a project for an artist named Terrell Grice. This project featured 23 of the most talented singers in the game! Avery Wilson, Brooke Simpson, and Lalah Hathaway to name a few. I recorded almost every single vocalist and also mixed and mastered the majority of the project. It's called "An Invitation to the Cookout." (available on all streaming platforms)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is that I truly care. I care about the hard work they put into their craft, and my job isn't to get in the way. I'm here to help bring YOUR vision to life & I'll do whatever it takes to make that happen!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing and Vocal Recording/Production
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to bring intention to a song. I'm a firm believer that simplicity can be quite beautiful. I'm very creative and love to try as many options as possible on a song BUT I never force something that doesn't feel like it truly belongs.

Yoo! This week I'm using some amazing speakers by a new company called Reproducer. They brought me 2 sets to try out and I'm loving them. I'm hearing more accurate low end and feel like I'm not guessing with vocal levels etc.
I just might use these instead of the Focals. We'll see!
