Interview with Adriano Ferreira
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: All the projects I worked are really special because all have their story. But one of the biggest I worked for is in The Send. I think It was the most important Gospel event in Brazil. It had 3 stadiums happening at the same time, worldwide streaming with Spanish and English translations. I was in one of the stadiums working as a streaming assistant. So many Brazilian and American important artists, It was 15 hours working non stop on this! Such an amazing experience!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right know I'm finishing an EP, I need to record guitars and vocals and then start o mix. Some others records coming and also concentrated in post some content at my Instagram account!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes! I have some friends of mine that also work mixing and clients with a great talent I have worked with.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Currently, I've been working with rock style and their other genres, but also love to work with Gospel Music, Indie Rock, Rap and everything.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Make the artist feel comfort and happy with the process and of course, the result of my work!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First of all I listening the reference the artist send to me. I try to understand what he's looking for. Then I open the daw and start to organize the session. I set names in the the tracks, colors and insert some plugins that I probably will use. It depends of the style, of course. Then I start to do some simple moves like volume movement and panning, this stage I'm listening to the song and analyzing the quality of the tracks. One thing its very important to divide the song into parts: Intro, verse, chorus, etc. This would be a game changer to understand the song and to apply automation into the song if it will needed.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is very simple. I use an Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface with Focusrite Saffire Octapre, everything goes to my Mackie One Knob monitor controller then to my Dynaudio Lyd 7 speakers. I also love to use headphones to mix, I have Sennheiser HD 6xx which is an amazing headphone reference. To have even a better result, I use Sonarworks to have a better flat reference when I mix. Most of the time I mix using plugins, so I have the best tools to help me: Waves Plugins, JST, Plugins Alliance, Fab Filter, Soothe 2, Neural Dsp, many others.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: In a perfect world? Both, but of course it depends. I love to have analog equipment for recording because you can record already Equalizating and compressing if it needs. For my workflow for mixing I prefer use totally in the box. We have awesome tools to work nowadays.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love to help small artists helping them to improve their songs, their sound. I love to do small changes that in the end of the day It will sound a big change. They can sound big and professional even if they are a local band. I love music, I'm into this since I was a kid, I'm here to make people dream and love their songs!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do I really need to edit my songs? I will answer: FOR SURE Also it depends of the style but nowadays everything you listen in the radio are edited. Editing makes your song sounds in the next level I would say
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People thinks that It easy and fast. Can be. But I love to take care each micro detail! I love to deliver something incredible that people really enjoy. Music is everything, music is movement and also feeling!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: To be honest I never thought about this possibility but whatever band that I used to listen would be awesome to work, maybe bands that I grew up listening, Queen for example.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: It depends of the project. Normally I record, mix and master bands from Brazil in my studio but sometimes people ask me just to mix if they live far away.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will take care of their songs like if I have a baby hahaha. I really want in the end of the day people loves my result, If don't, I will work hard to change this!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want to achieve? What's your favorite artists? Which reference your are thinking for this particular song? What this song's about? What you want to people feel when listen to your song?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I start when I was 3 my father gave me a drumkit. Then after that i became so fascinated into music so when i was 16 I started to help people in my church doing F.O.H. In 2010 I did my first audio course then i never stopped! It's been 6 years that I have my professional studio and I love help artists!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always make the artist comfort with you! Know how to capture what he really needs in the song
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Just my laptop and my Sennheiser headphones for sure!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm totally inspired by musicians I grew up listening. Because I'm a drummer I grew listening to Travis Barker, Aaron Gillespie, Aquiles Priester, some names to mention. Also, producers that recorded or mixed my favorite albums, suchs as Chris Lord-Alge, David Bendeth, Joey Sturgis, Dan Lancaster, Zakk Cervini, and others.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just be yourself and tell me what you really want in your song! I will work hard to bring everything you expect!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: New York style, modern!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I just wanna bring it to life! More power, more soul, I wanna help the band transmit what they want!
