Interview with Paul Kakac
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Just finished our second album last year "This Circle" with Woodland Park Band. I have 9 new originals, 2 stellar covers and 2 instrumentals on the album. My role was Songwriter, Co-Engineer in Studio, I was responsible to manage all the other musicians while in the studio & run sessions.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I've been hired to write a song for a couple. Thats how I found this site I was looking for a female singer for the project. I'm also currently working on our 3rd album in the band I'm in. I'm always writing and recording new music.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm new to this site and looking forward to meeting new people myself.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog, it's warm and real and imperfect. People don't connect to perfectly processed recordings in the same way. It's why there's a huge push for vinyl.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll do my best and I'll communicate well.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Guitar is like another limb and it's attached to me. I don't know life without it. I always have to be playing and creating new ideas. It's a curse at times as well. lol
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Open for collaborations. - Yes. Will you write me a song- Yes
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I'm really just starting out in my home studio realm. While I've been recording in studios for 30yrs I am now recording and writing for other people in my own studio so I'm goin through the learning curve. I ramp up quickly in whatever I do so it's been a fun process learning and recording on my own.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What inspired you to write this song. What is the project timeline and deadlines. What do you expect out of hiring me. Are you open to new ideas on your song or project or do you just want basic rhythm layers.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just be honest and I will do the same.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 5 Electric Guitars. I could stretch maybe 3-4 months out of strings on each one playing them alternatively.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 30+ Years as a guitarist/songwriter. I've run small businesses to have a good income to support the music I like to play and make. It's hard to make a full time living just doing music so it's important to be versatile and develop other skills.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a ton of energy. I play with total feel. I like to be in the moment, I like to create.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Luke Combs. I feel I could help add to his country rock style and love his energy live.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always trust your ear.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Country & Blues.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say lead guitar.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I believe I bring the ability to help people connect to a song. A lot of notes can be always be played, but it's the ability to tell a story with your instrument or vocal that makes the difference with how the song can connect. I have 30yrs of songwriting and playing experience but am always learning as music is never to be mastered, only experienced.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to digest the song and connect to it, then I start laying out ideas and record them based upon what the artist wants et. I'm a great communicator & really flexible in my turn around time & can work with most timelines on projects.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work out of my small office studio. I use Pro Logic for editing & Focus Rite Scartlett for Audio Interfaces. I have a variety of mic's for guitar cab's and multiple amps and electric guitars to help set moods in songs.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: John Mayer, Prince, SRV, Chris Stapleton
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Been a song writer for 30+ yrs. Available to help with arrangements, writing songs from scratch with your lyrics or full song creation. I love to create electric guitar tracks to help people connect to music and help tell the story of the song.
