Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I really enjoy seeing my song send up in film/tv - it will never stop amazing me that something i've created now can reach the ears of millions through screen. It's a really satisfying moment. Having said that I also absolutely love working on personal songs with clients - Anniversary songs, Valentines, Apology songs... it's so nice to be able to help people with that.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm constantly working on songs for film/tv and other artists. My clients keep me busy in a variety of genres and I love my work!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes! In particular some producer/mixers as well as an incredible guitar player and drummer. Please ask me and I will direct you to who will best suit your project.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog... I love 'real'... there is an energy that is transferred to another the less a 'moment' is interfered with. I love real vocals, nothing auto-tuned. Something that reached the soul.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you make something great! Yes I can :)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been in music for many years - I have been signed to Sony, BMG, Chrysalis and Nettwork. I was actually sitting on a subway in NY when someone discovered my music. I've written songs that have been released all over the world on albums and on tv shows and films. I love the connections I have made with people that have become great friends!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Real, authentic and emotive, quality...
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to sketch melody ideas while listening out loud on my NS10's and then once I have a basic concept of verse, pre, chorus and bridge I jump in my vocal booth and lay down a melodic vocal guide. After that I begin sketching lyrics. Often i've found that somewhere in the primal melody I laid down the story already resides...
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a Rhode NT2 mic and I like to use CLA wave plugins for playback. I always deliver high quality, organised dry wav files at the end of a session. My studio also has endless Guitars & Amps, Ukulele's and a beautiful Bluthner Upright Grand piano. I work in Logic Audio
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The Smiths, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, GoGo Penguin, Kate Bush, Prince, Billie Holiday, Bjork, Lamb
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: A quality product, a friendly collaborator with great communication. Easy exchange of ideas and files, no ego, fun creativity.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I live to create, I couldn't breathe without it. I love everything about creating music in all styles and sharing that magic with my collaborator (client).
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Just how hard I work... It sounds pretty breezy to be a singer but to stay in this business you have to work hard day in and day out!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Can you send me some references to some released songs in the style you are looking for. Can you send me seperate files - Instrumental, vocal melody line, lyrics etc. Do you have a release plan or can I help you with that.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to my vocal reel to see what I can bring to your project, ask me questions - I can send through further references specific to your project. I will only accept the project if I know I can deliver what you are looking for.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take my Laptop, Focusrite, Akai keyboard, Mic and Looper
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't edit out the breaths! Hearing the singer breathe enables you to feel so close and connected to the track, like you can touch the moment... sometimes raw wins...
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Dance, Ballad's, Electronic. I love it all! Anything from light and uplifting to dark, gritty and edgy.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My vocal sound is unique and i'm told it sits there right alongside some of the best female vocalists out there. Writing melody is one of my favourite parts of the songwriting process. I get many comments about my melodic instinct.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I deliver an authentic, connected and emotive vocal to every session I record. Having written and recorded songs for artists and film/tv for many years - I come up with extra ideas that would benefit the song to reach a wider audience and make your track stand out when it comes to radio.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Clients commission me for vocals and songwriting in all genres. They know that I will provide an authentic, connected performance whether it's a stripped pop love song or a deep dark emotive song for trailer music.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I've had the pleasure of working with incredible artists such as Elvis Costello & John Cale (Velvet Undergound) I have to say it would be pretty great to sing with Portishead and a live Orchestra!
