Interview with Sam Rawsteen of Ghostfaders

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Mixing and mastering Troubled Kid new ep “Super Star Vibes” and a few others I can’t mention.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: I’m new to this platform and I don’t know anyone unless they are on here and I didn’t know.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: To make your music sound beautiful. However, if there are problems with your audio we will discuss how to fix it first.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: Honestly every project I work on I’m proud of no one above the next. Every project departs with a part of me in it. My role usually is the recording, mixing and mastering engineer. I love giving artists their own sound. Yes you can copy others sound but what sets you apart from them?

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both and mainly because they both have their perks…

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I just love making music sound beautiful…

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What’s my rates? My answer is, if you are working on a project we can work it out if your budget isn’t in the ballpark as long as you are serious and we aren’t wasting time.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That anyone can do it, it’s easy…

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is it you see when you hear your music?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: If he works on music from his heart/soul give that guy a shot. It’s not about the money. It’s about the music…

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: MacBook Pro, Apollo quad, mogami cables and a focal speaker set w/sub.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path was an artist to begin with however I was fascinated by how an engineer takes nothing and make it something. I’ve been mixing music since 1999. So I’ve been in this over 20yrs.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Crazy creative with a vintage outlook on how music should sound.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Bun B of UGK. His voice is dope and I’d like to hear what I can make it sound like.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always record in the green, level don’t matter as long as it’s green.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Lots of hip-hop aka rap, trap etc…

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My heart. It leads me throughout the process. If my heart doesn’t move the record isn’t done unfortunately.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Only my heart and great intentions to bring the artists dream to reality.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Day 1 Listen to record, determine what needs to be done begin vocal mix then prep instrumental for mixing. Day 2 mix instrumental and Marry with vocal. Day 3 listen to mix and master the record if all check lists are met.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a hybrid setup approach in which have the ability to give out a digital/analog mix/master. I use mogami cabling insuring the clearest signal to noise ratio. I’m using a calibrated environment to insure I hear what I need to hear. Focal monitors for mixing and mastering. Dangerous gear as my go between when it comes to the analog world of things.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Dr.Dre,The Neptune’s, Timbaland, Engineer Ears, Dave Pensado, Just Blaze, SwizzBeats, Leslie Brathwaite, Young Guru
