Abi Hercules on SoundBetter

I'd love nothing more than to complete your song with a strong top line, vocal, create lyrics like no other, or write you a complete song. I look forward to hearing about your project and collaborating. Oh, the joys of the internet and music...

I write songs for other artists, TV (notably Disney), film, special events, children & young people and myself. I've been writing songs for 20 years and have arranged, produced, played (Piano, mandolin, guitar, flute) and recorded countless tracks of my songs. My forte? Hooks and storytelling. As a lyricist, I've an ability to inhabit the mind of the protagonist, speak the unspoken, draw in the listener. Sometimes darkly humorous, some light, poignant, funny. Whatever serves the song. As a singer, I am no belty, tricksy diva but if it's a rich, gutsy, rocky, indy English voice you are after... Or you want a lighter, folkier feel?
How does it work?
*Get in touch and tell me about your project
*Send me your track, BPM, lyrics (If appropriate)
*I'll check in with you part way to see I'm on the right track
*I'll send you an mp3 rough mix.On approval & released funds I'll send dry wav stems.

  15. Review by Marcin Z.

Abi did a great job re-writing our lyrics. First, she listened very carefully, got into the mood of the song, very patient with a few iterations and re-writes. Great commitment - Abi finished the work despite going through difficult personal developments. Plus, great "free" advice on the key change for the last chorus section - something you get from an experienced musician/producer that takes your song to the next level!

Interview with Abi Hercules

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: Simple home studio - Nord Stage 3 keyboard, Roland Keyboard, Rode NT1000 mic, Logic X Pro, Aston Spirit Mic

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Apart from all my early influences (anyone from Ella, Nina Simone, Otis Redding to Kate Bush, Yazoo, Peter Gabriel) I am enjoying Christine & The Queens, Joan As Police Woman, recent Paulo Nutini, Melody Gardot.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Peter Gabriel, Nial Rodgers, Vince Clarke - Masters in the field of sound

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: I have self-produced two albums of my songs. The first was a live record but the second was more complex - several studios, many sessions, overdubs, backing vocals. I found my band, arranged the songs (including BVs and a horn section), ran the sessions whilst playing and singing, mixed the tracks with my engineer, oversaw the artwork...and off it went to the printers! I realise there are no grammy nominations in there but I guess what I am saying is I am hardworking, committed and have a positive energy.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: Currently, I am working up some new tunes of mine in the hope of finding a publisher, some sync or even an artist to re-record them.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Browse around and chat to a few providers before making a decision. No question is too daft and you can't ask too many; ensure you get a good feel for the potential working relationship before committing.

  13. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  14. A: Arthur Pingrey

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I will listen and work with you, I may question, challenge even but the end result will be something of which we are proud.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: Sharing my passion and enjoying the collaborative journey.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What is your hope for the finished track? Do you have a deadline? What attracted you to my profile? Why do you feel I may be the right collaborator for your project?

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Piano, Mandolin (spare strings!), a recorder, TC Helicon Voicelive Touch

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: An actress by trade I started writing songs on the road in 2000 and then when I stopped touring as an actress, I started performing and recording my own music. You don't have to wait for the phone to ring to write songs! I formed a band (The Easy Tigers) who supported me. My experience as an actress definitely colours my songwriting and my ability to inhabit the protagonist.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Strong storytelling, hooky tunes

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Leave space

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Currently, pop

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Listening

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Honesty, guts, strong story-telling, imagery, weight, character, an English accent!

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Topline: If you have some strong ideas for your track, that's great. I would find out from you what you would like to say to the listener, how you would like them to feel and I would use your input to shape the song you would like to create. Of course, your track is the foundation to the story we tell... Songwriting: If I write a song from scratch, it most commonly starts with a lyrical idea, developed in my mind over days, often whilst cycling. Mostly, I say what I want to say then I sit at the piano to write the music. Both lyrics and music are then developed together - the top line melody is honed once the song format is nailed. If it's a groove song, I may pull up a loop, lay down a bass line and then write to that. Song commissions: To help with lyrical content, I have a list of questions which I would like you to answer, which will inform the story we tell. Needless to say, Skype calls make the world a much smaller place!

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: To date, writing and performing (and sometimes recording) complete songs but as I am new to Soundbetter, that's going to change...
