Interview with Stephen Thomas Sims
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest two skills are production and vocals. I have been a vocalist for many years now and I pride myself on knowing how to deliver the vocal you are after. I know the time needed to create commercially viable recordings and to achieve it. This has come from years of working with top vocal coaches and with producers in studios globally.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my creative inspiration, talent and versatility. Every vocalist and producer has their own unique vision. I would say I can bring an honesty and truth to pieces. I like to create music that really speaks to people in different ways regardless of genre.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to start with finding out exactly what the client wants with the project. I can then see how we can both move forward. Before any full production stage, I like to take the piece back to scratch and find out what I need to bring to it. This differs with each project but I like to update my client as I go. I think its good to see a natural, progressive workflow.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: With my TV/film pieces I am extremely inspired by Hans Zimmer, who I believe is a genius of sound design and instrumentation. Melodically I am a huge fan of Danny Elfman, I also have a love for his smaller orchestral arrangements. For contemporary music, I am inspired by Ryan Tedder, George Michael, Depeche Mode, Hurts, Pet Shop Boys and Elton John. I like melody and soul within music & if that can be married with a great production - I want to get on board.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I've been lucky to have varied work. From session work at high-level quick turnarounds; collaborating on tracks as a featured vocalist - writing the top-line, lyrics; composing for Tv, Film & Game and producing artists E.P. It's always been different. Which I think is musically and technically good for any musician/producer. I think it also shows my artistry, professionalism and versatility well.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a small but well-equipped studio set up. I also use a local studio for further detailed mixing/mastering. I use a Neumann TLM 102, WA -87, a Se 4400a all into an ISA-ONE Focusrite Pre-amp. Logic PRO X is my main DAW. I have all of the latest top quality VST'S including Orchestral Tools - Spitfire Audio - Cinestrings - EWQL - WAVES - Spectrasonics and more. The studio is well equipped for what I need to execute big projects.
