Interview with -------------------------------------
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My music taste is extremely eclectic, and I'll listen to almost anything, regardless of genre or language. A lot of the music I listen to is not sung in English, and I like that cuz I've found it gives me a greater appreciation for music in its essence. It's the universal language. So because of that, there are a wide range of artists that inspire me. Notable ones include Hikaru Utada, Tracy Chapman, Linkin Park, Bjork, Fall Out Boy, Gackt, Sigur Ros, Amanda Marshall, Green Day, Santigold, and Mariah Carey. But there are many, MANY more.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to sing! And singing makes me happy.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't be shy! I'm always happy to work with other musicians and artists. Just bring your ideas, creativity, and a big smile!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my personal music style as alternative pop-rock. It's a blend of the genres I enjoy working in, and it's broad enough to encompass the many different styles that I like to explore.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Hikaru Utada. As a songwriter, she's just so creative, and I feel like I would learn a lot from her.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Anything! Anything and everything. I'm always up for a challenge, and every experience is a chance to grow.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Once I've got the music and/or instrumental that I'm working with, I'll sit down and listen to it several times. As I'm listening, I start "mapping out" the song, dividing it into its different sections: intro (if needed), verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus (if needed), chorus, bridge, chorus, outro (if needed). Generally, those are my song structures, but depending on the music, I could change it up, switch things around, and just get creative. Once I've got my "map", I go through each section and begin humming a melody. I do this for the entire song, and from this, I record the vocal melody or top-line. If I'm satisfied with how it all sounds, then I start writing the lyrics to match the melody, being sure to take pronunciation into account. I like to tell a story with my lyrics: the first verse introduces the story; the chorus is the main point; the second verse adds more information to the story; the main point is repeated again in the second chorus; the bridge adds a new perspective on the story, or tells it from a different angle; and the last chorus and outro drive the point home.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: When singing, it would have to be my lower register. Although my range is quite wide, and my natural speaking voice is high pitched, I'm more comfortable when I'm singing lower notes. I feel more at home there.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my creativity and absolute love for music. I'm knowledgeable in various styles of music, and depending on the song, I like to bring in elements from each to make something that's unique and fun to listen to.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Sing! Typically, what I do is record lead vocals, background vocals - or both - for my clients. If needed, I'll write melodies and lyrics, as well.
