Mixing engineer.

Sohta is a versatile engineer who built a good relationship both in the indie and the mainstream industry in the US and abroad. He is well known in Boston for his swift, precise and personable work etiquette and philosophy. His process is catered specifically to the artist and what that artist is trying to achieve.

"Mixing is like the interior design. You move in to a new house, get furniture, lighting, carpet and such of your choice. Next is to place them in the room. You can do this process by yourself, but leaving it to a professional can take best out of what you got, placing them to where they belong to. Even if you are good at interior design, having other perspective can bring it to the next level."

Sohta was a pleasure to deal with and came through on a project of mine that had a very tight deadline.
I would not hesitate to call upon him and work with him again.

Sohta responds very quickly and he is very easy to work with. He has a lot of knowledges ,a good ear and mixes very well.
He tries to get the closer as possible at what you are looking for and give good advices.
Unfortunately , we weren't able to finish our project the way I expected , because I wasn't 100% done yet with my production.

Patient, dilligent and professional. Sohta has been our go-to since our first single, when we were sending him a rat king of 100+ reverb-drenched unlabeled "stems". It's remarkable hes still willing to work with us. He's integral to the development the overall CliffLight "sound" and in many ways consider him a part of our group.

Interview with Sohta Tsuchiya

Can you share one music production tip?
Love the song so every time you listen to it, you find something new&exciting.
What type of music do you usually work on?
Pop 80%, both acoustic and electric. (Sub-genre within the category "Pop" is so wide that I work with lots different, tho…)
What's your strongest skill?
Dense mix with clarity. I believe these two completely opposite elements can co-exist.
What do you bring to a song?
I glue sounds. This is a really tough question. Such a cliché but I'd say "What song calls for". Clarity and isolation of instruments, while maintaining connection between them.
Tell us about your studio setup.
Recently moved to fully ITB set up. ProTools HD 11 as main tool, but I also work with Logic, Ableton Live, and Digital Performer. Plug-ins I use are Waves, McDSP, SlateDigital, Softube, etc., etc. I may go back to analog summing in near future but Waves NLS and SlateDigital VCC serves the purpose for now.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
Manny Marroquin, his dense sounds always surprises me and inspires me.
What's your typical work process?
I take demo/producer's mix to everywhere, listen in my car, in the city walking around on iPhone, etc., to get the vibe of the song. Once I get myself into the song, I start putting the ProTools session files together while previewing each tracks/stems provided. From there, it's pure artistic process as improvising on instruments, sound fine tuning and dynamics automation comes as songs call.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
80% of my daily work is mixing, 10% mastering and 10% producing.
