Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Barata started playing drums at age of 5. His whole childhood was surrounded by music. Samba and specially Bossa Nova were his playground. This great culture genuine from RJ, Brazil, made his drumming a reference around the world. During his teens years, he started to play with great SambaJazz legends from 60’s that introduced to him the Jazz world. This experience enhanced his jazz approach so much, that years later he went to NY, where he started to play with the Jazz masters.
Barata has been working with Grammy names such as Dianne Reeves, Eliane Elias (over than 10 years), his idol Jaques Morelenbaum (Jobim’s Cello Player/arranger) in their Cello Samba Trio with Lula Galvão, who also introduced him to another legend, the singer Rosa Passos, 20 years ago, when they started to do few projects together.
