Ken was the greatest plus to our project we could have added. His technical skills and musicality are excellent without any doubt. But even more he totally influenced the whole attitude, both professionally and interpersonally positively during the complete course of our work. Strongly recommended for anyone looking for a producer/artist developer!

Interview with Ken Hutton

What are you working on at the moment?
a Neo-soul / smooth jazz project with a great young singer.
What do you like most about your job?
Getting behind an artist's vision and facilitating their success.
What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
Some people have the misconception that perfection is the goal. Over-tuning, over-processing, and over-mixing tend to make sterile sounding products. Editing and mixing should always allow for natural feel and flow. We want the technology to enhance the humanity, not oppress it.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
20+ years. Started assisting in Nashville at Sound Emporium, worked up to being in high demand, got burned out from too many hours, took a break to regroup, started working in sound therapy and Neurotherapy, found my love for music again, then began doing artist development for unsigned talent, which I find very rewarding.
What type of music do you usually work on?
vocal-centric music across many genres
What's your strongest skill?
Musicality
What do you bring to a song?
I was trained as an orchestral trumpet player, then got deep into Nashville singer / songwriter projects. I make sure that everything I do is strong technically, but the ultimate goal is to respect, preserve, enhance, and never lose sight of the most important aspect; musicality.
Tell us about your studio setup.
My studio is called barebones, because it has nothing unnecessary, but each element from instruments to cpu to software to plugins to monitors is high end and used musically. Gear can be impressive, but like a surgeon's scalpel, if not used with skill and discretion, it can be quite destructive.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
currently can't get enough of Gregory Porter, Snarky Puppy, and the Metropole Orkestra.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
These days, I'm mostly doing artist development in Germany as producer / engineer.
