Mike is the best mastering engineer on Soundbetter. No questions asked. I will exclusively be working with him for all my mix projects. You should too! It puts my mind at ease to have some one I can trust as much as this guy.

Mike is a true pro. I've worked with him on a few projects, and can say that he is worth every penny! If you want to take your mix to the next level of sound quality, go with Mike!

  4. Review by ------------------------------------------------------------

Mike is world class. He gets sonics better than most and he works hard to magnify my mixes. He is definitely someone to build a long term working relationship with. Hire Mike if you want to sound great. Don't hire him if you want to sound just ok.

For as long as I have known Mike he has been a dedicated audio professional who always is doing his best work. Mike has been my got-to mastering engineer since I started my career as a mixing engineer in Nashville and there isn't anyone else I trust to put the final touches on my mixes!

Interview with Mike Cervantes

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: Our studio setup consists of an accurate monitoring system that helps us expertly make decisions on how to help your mix sounds its best.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I started out playing music in local bands. I could never find anyone who could record and get the sounds I wanted so I started to learn how to record music myself. I bought Pro Tools when I was 17 and found a school that I could go to for audio engineering. While in school, I played in bands and recorded other bands I played shows with. After recording a few popular local bands and "the phone kept ringing". Once I graduated from college, I started a recording studio and produced local to national touring artists. The opportunity to move to Nashville came up and I got to learn mastering from renown mastering engineer Hank Williams at Mastermix. So I closed my studio and moved to Nashville to learn from a legend. While I was an apprentice for Hank, the opportunity to move and work at Masterdisk NYC came up. Once I moved to NYC, worked my way up the ranks and started mastering music for anyone I could. Got to 2nd assist on a Dave Matthews live album, had some music on the Billboard charts, and built a handful of clientele. Then I decided to move back to my hometown with my wife and start my own mastering studio (The Foxboro). I've been working in audio production for over 15 years and don't plan to stop anytime soon.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: My style is whatever is appropriate for the song. The song and the direction the client has given me is what matters most.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Artists who are passionate and confident in the music they are making while being themselves and not trying to be anyone else.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: If you mixed into a limiter, it's good to send a version of your mix to mastering with the limiter on AND a version without it on so that we can have 2 options to work with.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: We will listen to the song one time through to get an idea of what's going on musically AND sonically, then determine what is needed to improve the quality of the mix and meet the client's needs.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: The only type of work I do for my clients is mastering.

  15. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  16. A: Theres definitely a lot. Anything that is mixed well.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: A lot of great music!

  19. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  20. A: Doug Weier. We work on ALMOST everything he mixes. We're a great team!

  21. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  22. A: Both. They have their place in different areas of the record making process.

  23. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  24. A: We will do whatever you want us to do for your music, the best we can, and the fastest we can no matter what level you are at in the music industry. We're all about patience and will listen to your requests while doing everything we can to guide you in the best direction to reach your goals. We're here for you.

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: We like that we get to work on tons of different music and it's always at a fast pace.

  27. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  28. A: Customer: "(Place common question here)?" Me: "Yes, we can do that for you."

  29. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  30. A: The two biggest misconceptions are that we can re-mix the song (can change individual levels of the mix) AND that we can take your limited/loud mix and make it louder.

  31. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  32. A: What direction can you give us? What are you looking to get out of this mastering session? Do you want me to be as transparent as possible with your mix and ONLY make it louder? Or would you like me to do a little bit of "Mojo" to get it to where I think it should be competitively?

  33. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  34. A: My advice would be to make sure your mixes are really ready for mastering (the better your mix, the better the master will be).

  35. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  36. A: Amphions, Sequoia, A Laptop, UAD satellite with a handful of plugins, and a good pair of headphones.

  37. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  38. A: We have worked on every genre of music from all over the world including Pop, Christian, Country, Praise & Worship, Rock, Hip-Hop, & EDM all in multiple languages.

  39. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  40. A: Patience and Vision. -Patience because we usually get mixes at the very last min of when the turn in day is. Patience is required cause usually everyone else involved in the project is really burnt out and stressed. -Vision because sometimes we'll get a mix with no direction at all and we're expected to make it sound a certain way. So we do whatever we think the mix needs and somehow that was exactly what the client wanted. We call that a home-run ;)

  41. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  42. A: Most of our clients comment on how much bigger and clearer their mix sounds after we master it. We've also received comments on how much louder we were able to get a mix in comparison to when the mixer used "(Whatever is the popular loudness plugin of the month here)".

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: The musicians and music production professionals who inspire us are the ones who are passionate and confident in the music they are making while being themselves and not trying to be anyone else.
