Sander van der Heide is a multi platinum and award winning mastering engineer from the Netherlands. He has more than over 30 years of experience in mastering for all kind of formats, in all kinds of genres.
He started mastering at Wisseloord Studios, became owner of the studios and left to start mastering at Galaxy Studios, working with his friend and mentor Ronald Prent. Returned to Wisseloord Studios to join Darcy Proper in setting up Wisseloord Mastering. Recently build his own mastering suite, The Saint of Sound, build to his specifications for switching between mastering in stereo and immersive (5.1 and Dolby Atmos) for streaming, CD, DVD/Blu-ray and vinyl.
Using a mix of both vintage analogue and digital technologies, Sander is skilled in mastering all genres including Pop, Jazz, Heavy Metal, Folk, Indie Rock, Electronic, Dance, Classical, Soundtrack, Musical, Singer-Songwriter, Piano, Christian Contemporary, Americana, World, Latin, Funk and R&B-Soul.
Over the years he worked for several majors and Indie labels like EMI Records, Universal Records, Sony Music, Disney, Warner Records, Capitol Records, Verve, Blue Note, Virgin Music and V2 Records. Interview with Sander van der Heide
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When creating deliverables for mastering, Create a reference for yourself or your clients and also send it to me, so I know what you listened to. Create a pre-master with no limiting in the end (just lower your output a couple of dB’s) and turn of any EQ or compressor that was added after mixing, just leave in everything on the mixbus that was a creative decision.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I like both. There is no winner here, it’s not that one is better than the other, but it’s more a different kind of way of working. There is stuff you can’t do in the analog domain and turning a knob on a display is kind of strange. In the end, it’s the result that counts.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Well, after 30 years of mastering, I found out that no project is the same. Even something coming from the same studio, same engineer, same artist. So every project I address as it is a new one. I use no templates, no default settings, no standard mastering chain. I listen to the music and see what it needs to take it to a higher level.
