Stefan Boman on SoundBetter

30+ years of mixing. Clients include Opeth, Roxette, The Cardigans, Avicii, Ghost, Kent. What I hear all the time from my clients is that they like my sense of creating depth, warmth and feel to their mixes. Certified in Dolby Atmos and an approved mixer for Universal Music Group.

I started out in 1995 woking at the world famous Polar studios, built by the band ABBA. Quickly moved on to be the main inhouse engineer of the big studio A working with bands like Def Leppard, Burt Bacharach, Alice Cooper, Chic, Kent, The Hellacopters, Backstreet Boys, Freddie Wadling and Sahara Hotnights to name a few.
Staying on as in-house engineer at Polar between 1995-2001 then moving on to be freelance working at lots of different studios around Europe.
Looking for a base to work out of and a place to keep all the collected gear he joined up with Swedish band Kent to buy Park studio in Stockholm in 2004. Park studio started up in the 70-ties and has been the place for many classic hits over the decades. Besides the many Kent albums made at Park studios, other projects include Salem Al Fakir, Hellacopters, Erik Hassle, Camera Obscura, 69 Eyes, Hives, The Solution, Backyard Babies, Graveyard…

My mix room is now at the legendary Atlantis Studios Stockholm with fantastic vintage outboard and echo chamber(famous from ABBA)

Stefan has under his belt so many records that I find inspiring and I wanted a touch of this magic.
Super professional and there to go the extra mile (or ten miles) to make sure that I was satisfied.
Thanks a million, Stefan. You The MAN!

Stefan was the perfect fit for this project. Was it because of the style of music? No, though this was rock, and he nailed it. Was it because of the gear? No, but he hast state of the art equipment. Was it because we are a big deal with a ton of industry buzz? Ha!
What it all comes down to is that Stefan is incredibly good, has a keen sense and golden ears, but most importantly, he CARES!
Do not hesitate to launch a project with Stefan. You will be sooo glad that you did!

Proficient in his work always - Stefan constantly and consistently delivers a fantastic master! So much so that he is now my band's go-to Mastering Engineer on SoundBetter. Really cannot recommend him enough, especially if you're anywhere within the realm of Rock/Alternative/World/Progressive music, Stefan is your guy.

Stefan was outstanding to work with. His first run at a mix was spot on. We asked for a couple changes for preference and he nailed it. When you work with Stefan you will realize the value of a pro. Thank you!! (Oh… and we signed up with Stefan for more)

Stefan is an absolute Mastering power house. I've had several singles mastered with him now and working with him never disappoints! Always on the ball with communication and his work is pristine and timely, too. If you're doing anything along the lines of Rock/Alternative/World music, Stefan is your guy.

Our project was in the Symphonic Metal/ Prog genre. Stefan was punctual on communication, fast on revisions, and overall a great engineer with a great final product. The band was particular happy with the clarity any separation of bass, drums, and guitars...even over the 40+ orchestration tracks, 3 cello tracks, and 10+ vocal tracks. Highly Recommended!

Stefan is a pleasure to work with. When you mix remotely, you have to rely on the engineer and trust him. We give a guideline, but the rest is up to him. Stefan ticked all the boxes and I'm fully satisfied with his work.

    The best there is.
He did a remarkable job in mixing my song "Goodnight Farewell". The song sounded totally different and well balanced.
Another great thing about Stefan, is that there were not any "back and forth" trying this and that. He just did the job perfect at once.
I can highly recommend Stefan if you want the perfect result.
I'm looking forward to our next project.

Stefan made an amazing work with mixing and mastering my music for me. Always positive and willing to take on anything I threw at him. Since I'm a composer and not that much of a studio guy I explained my view of the production in pictures. But he understood what I was aiming for and in no time made it happen. He a true professional and a nice guy at the same time.

Interview with Stefan Boman

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Done a couple of albums with Opeth, Kent and the Hellacopters that stand out for me. I've recorded, mixed and often co-produced them.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Doing a lot of Dolby Atmos for Universal music as well as mixing a couple of rock albums.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Lots of great artists and bands here!!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Like both! Analog gear for vibe and inconsistenty and digital for versatility, details and recallability.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I always give 100% to get the most out of your music!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I really like getting into the "soul" and details of a song. Also working in a variety of music, I Think really helps me to be diverse and creative.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long do you usually spend on a song? I usually spend about a day on s song but often spread out over a couple of days for added objectivity.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Sometimes confusion between mixing/mastering(rare).

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Usually ask about creative intent, how its been recorded, the latest rough mix and a preferred reference track.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be clear about what you want out of this. Get the session or files organised and keep an open mind!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Uh tough one! Neumann U47, Blue stripe 1176, RCA BA-6A, EMI RS-124 and my custom spring reverb.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Been working as a pro for about 30 years and started out as an paid intern at Polar Studios Stockholm where I got to work with everyone from Def Leppard, The Backstreet Boys, Alice Cooper, Burt Bacharach to Chic. Owned a couple of studios over the years and is now part owner of the legendary Atlantis Studios in Stockholm which is most famous for being the studio where ABBA recorded most of their big hits.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: A clear sonic ID that fits the artist. Working hard to get energy, warmth and depth into the music.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: There's so many! I'd love to work with Beck, Queens of the Stone Age, Hozier, Crowded House, Peter Gabriel...

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Whenever I hear a demo for the very first time I always keep a notepad ready to get all my initial ideas and reactions down on paper. That first objective and unspoiled listen is really important as that is what a first time listener would hear and react to.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I jump between Rock, mainstream pop to metal and everything in between. More interesting to me that way!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I would say Im good at putting the glue in the mix and making the song cohesive and interesting.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I always work had to get into the vibe of the song and create a sonic ID and get the energy going to the right parts and make the whole song interesting.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I usually listen to the rough mix a couple of times to sense of what the intention of the recording was and also to get a feel for what I want to do with it. Most times I get an idea quite fast of where I want the song to end up. I always try to work fast and efficient in the beginning to not loose track of where I want it to land. When I go back and tweak details when needed.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: These days I have a hybrid setup with my vintage analog favourites like RCA BA-6A, Pye compressors, Shadow Hills, Chandler stuff, Lang EQs and analog summing. I also have this custom made stereo spring reverb that is my absolute favourite piece ever!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I get inspired by all types of music but the things that gets me hooked is when you hear something that takes you somewhere else.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: These days I mainly do mixing. I really try to understand what the intent of the recording is and what the band/artist vision is. My main focus is always about feel. What you feel when you hear the music. so my main thing is to enhance or create that thing that captures your interest and puts you in THAT place. I'm also doing a lot of work in Dolby Atmos, both with new music as well as remixing classic albums from artists like Roxette. Avicii and The Cardigans.
