Endorse Ali Staton2 Reviews

Ali has mixed some of the tracks I've played drums on. Always sounding fantastic. I would unreservedly recommend Ali.

Ali’s mixes are spectacular - strong, clear and dynamic. His work is poppy and punchy but always retains space and air. As a producer in the studio Ali is imaginative and sympathetic - he brings great ideas and a wealth of taste and experience, and he’s always ready to explore. I love working with Ali and I’m sure you will too.
Interview with Ali Staton
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is my work with Ishmael Ensemble on their album 'Rituals'. I co-produced and mixed the album, and am also part of the team at the Bristol based label Severn Songs that released it. It was a genuinely collaborative process, and seeing the project connect with listeners, receive national radio support and chart in the UK was incredibly satisfying.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A mix of production and mixing projects across album and single releases, plus developing new material with artists at early stages.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: There’s a lot of great talent on SoundBetter, if a project isn’t right for me, I’m always happy to point clients towards someone who’s a better fit.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. They’re tools. What matters is choosing the right one at the right moment and not letting the process get in the way of the music.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To treat every project with care, honesty and respect, and to always serve the song above everything else.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping artists hear their music the way they imagined it.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “Can you make this sound bigger?” Usually the answer is yes but often by simplifying, not adding.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it’s all about gear or technique. The real work is taking time to understand the artist's vision and bringing my taste and experience to help the artist deliver on that.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you trying to say with this song? Who is it for? And how do you want it to feel when it’s finished?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who listens as much as they talk. The best results come from trust, communication and shared intent not just great technical ability.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop, a great pair of headphones, a simple interface, one reliable microphone and something to make noise with, limitations create opportunity.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I came up through studios, learning hands-on, assisting, engineering and eventually producing and mixing full-time. I’ve been working professionally in music for over two decades, across studio and label environments.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I like records that feel otherworldly and take you on a journey.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’m always drawn to artists who are evolving and taking risks. Working with people who are curious and open to discovery. David Byrne though would be a dream project!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Commit early. Endless options slow records down, strong decisions, even imperfect ones, usually lead to better results.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly modern pop, alternative and electronic leaning music. Any genre where emotion, texture and detail matter as much as impact.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Knowing what to leave out. I’m good at making confident decisions that simplify a track and let it breathe, while still making it sound polished and powerful.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Perspective. In a time where artists and producers are required to perform multiple roles I help strip things back to what really matters, and help guide the production and mix around that. My job is to make sure nothing distracts from the song’s core message.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I endeavour to understand the artist’s reference points, intentions and what success looks like for the track. I try to maintain a focused, collaborative process, with clear milestones, honest feedback, and plenty of space for experimentation.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is built around accuracy and comfort. A hybrid setup with great monitoring on my ATCs, carefully chosen analogue pieces and a digital workflow that’s fast and flexible. The aim is a space where decisions translate outside the room and artists feel relaxed enough to be creative.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who make bold creative decisions while still serving the song. I’m drawn to work that feels intentional, timeless and slightly left of centre. David Bowie is my compass artistically.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I’m producing and mixing records for artists who want their music to feel finished, confident and competitive. Whether that’s developing ideas from demos or taking productions over the line into release ready mixes.
