World-class operatic and classical soprano offering solo and choral vocals, from soaring opera arias to lush choral arrangements and everything in between! I am the featured vocal artist on the debut album by Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode/Erasure), "Songs of Silence", and can often be found session singing at Abbey Road Studios.
I have sung in operas, oratorios and choral works in venues like the Royal Albert, Royal Festival and Birmingham Symphony Halls as well as in live performances on BBC Radio 3, working with world-class orchestras and conductors like Sir Andrew Davies, Gianandrea Noseda and Paul Daniel.
I am also an experienced session singer, recording in Abbey Road and Maida Vale for groups including the BBC Singers, London Voices and Vocals Unlimited for major film franchises, renowned composers and music artists.
My voice type is a lyric soprano (F3 to D6) with a strong lower range too. I sing in many languages including English, Italian, French, German and Spanish and can also melody or harmonies for you. I can work either from prepared sheet music or audio, or from any spoken or written outline you may have that forms the basis of your idea. I can also sing in a more ethereal style for movie, TV and game soundtracks, as well as ballads and ambient music.
As a trained composer with a degree from Durham University I also offer composition and transcription services. I've created solo vocal, choral and orchestral arrangements for a wide range of clients, including film/TV composers and artists in genres ranging from classical crossover to RnB and heavy metal.
Whether you have a specific piece in mind or just a musical idea, I'll work with you to bring your vision to life!

Interview with Caroline Joy
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have been fortunate to work with many wonderful musicians over the years so it's hard to narrow it down! I've had amazing experiences performing in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall, working with conductors like Gianandrea Noseda, Sir Andrew Davies and Paul Daniel. While I still love performing live, more recently I've enjoyed learning how to record and produce my own music and so when opportunity arose to work with Autumn Tears on their March 2021 release, "The Glow of Desperation", I was thrilled to be involved as I was given the chance to have some of my own songs feature on the album. This has inspired me to keep writing and see what I can create of my own music alongside the performing!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on writing more of my own songs, and hope to produce my own album in the next year.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I've loved singing for a long time so being able to do it every day for a living is amazing! I love collaborating with many other incredible artists who trust me to bring my own creativity and skills to a project.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Since starting work as a remote session singer I've worked with artists in many musical genres, from classical to hip hop and heavy metal
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm a huge classical music fan (no surprise there!) - some of my favourite composers to name but a few are Vaughan-Williams, Stravinsky, Puccini and Debussy. I also love film music composers including Morricone, Nyman and Zimmer. Vocally, I'm inspired by many versatile singers including Birgit Nilsson, Maria Callas, Mirella Freni, Angela Gheorghiu, Kate Bush, Björk and Annie Lennox.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Versatility!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Like any singer, I like to bring my own unique sound and abilities to anything I'm working on; however I am open to specific requests regarding vocal technique and sonority, such as singing without vibrato or using a lighter, breathier tone than usually used by an opera singer.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I'm a fast sight reader and I learn music quickly, so I can turn orders around very quickly if needed. I love working with new music and arias and like to go deeper into the structure, lyrics and feel of a piece if I have the luxury of time to do so! I usually work very organically if I'm composing, although I still often transcribe what I'm about to record so I can alter it easily if necessary.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from my home studio using Logic Pro X, using my Aston Spirit mic and Audient iD44 interface.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I'm often asked to perform a pre-written classical or operatic piece, or to compose a melody line for an instrumental track. I'm very open to writing my own melodies and harmonies for all kinds of music.

Video
I loved working with Matthew Weaver on this song. The church where I got married in south Shropshire was ideal for the video!
"This was an absolutely fantastic experience. I would give beyond 5 stars if I could as Caroline’s skills are on a whole different level. If you’re interested in a performance that adds the kind of depth that only a true pro can offer, get this gig!"

Loved working with Autumn Tears on another album! As well as writing vocals for some of their tracks, this album also includes 3 of my own songs - 'How Still The Day', 'Throw It Over' and 'Wordless Waltz'.
We're now working on another mini-album planned for release in Autumn 2021.

"The Good Book" - film and soundtrack release
It was a pleasure to work with one of my SoundBetter clients, talented composer Heather Fenoughty, on this soundtrack:
The Good Book
The piece she asked me to record the vocals for was Hildegard von Bingen's beautiful piece 'Spiritus Sanctus Vivificans'... I think Heather did a wonderful job of using this ancient piece in a modern context!
