Was an absolute pleasure working with Niko!! He produced such a great instrumental, that really inspired me to write an emotional/uplifting topline. He was very specific about what he was looking for, which greatly assisted me in the writing process. Furthermore, he was always very kind, quick to respond, & complementary of my work. Definitely looking forward to working together again in the future!!

Interview with Niko Maillet

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: Macbook M1 Air, Audio Technica M50's, Arturia Minilab mkII, iLok, Pen and notebook

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: Melodic, groovy Deep House music

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: KREAM or Meduza because they have such clean distinct styles of Deep House and I would love to learn from them!

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Take an EQ and put a Low Pass Filter/Hi Cut on your master with a nice steep slope, and bring it all the way down to 100 hz. When you solo the low end of your entire mix you will be able to tell immediately if your kick and bass are working together are clashing. If they are clashing, you can use side chain to duck the bass out of the way when the kick hits, or you can chop the bass transient that overlaps with the kick and apply fades. This will allow the kick to cut through the mix and duck your bass out of the way manually and the small cut will not be audible, if it is you cut too much!

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Deep House, Tech House, Electro House, Bass House

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Clear communication, and a friendly attitude. I will always work to make sure you are happy with the result!

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: First I will organize and label all of the stems, and group them into what makes sense for that song. Then I will set the kick and bass levels to find a good relationship with the two most important elements in a Dance record in my opinion. Once the foundation is solid, I will set volume levels for every other element until there is a nice balance with plenty of headroom. At this point there will usually be some issues that start to present themselves that I will need to address using EQ, panning, compression, etc. When I find a really good place for the mix, I will then run everything through my master chain which consists of a few really clean-sounding plugins that add just a subtle touch and bring everything together. The true secret to loud slamming mixes is in the clipping in to the limiter. When I have a super clean mix, and I push it into a clipper, I can chop off any peaks that jump out and that allows me to push the final mix into the limiter so much further whilst remaining totally clean.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I mix in Logic using mostly third-party plugins such as Fab Filter, Plugin Alliance, UAD, and many more. I use Yamaha HS7's and Audio Technica M50's in a treated room. I typically use my eyes to mix the low-end using Spectrum Analyzers, and I will solo just the low end to ensure that the kick and bass have a back-and-forth relationship so they aren't falling on top of each other and muddying up the mix.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: Some of my biggest influences are Zhu, Meduza, Kream, Alok, Nora En Pure, and Porter Robinson

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Mixing and Mastering for Electronic Producers, from Deep House, and Bass House, to Future Bass and Trap, etc. As long as you give me some references of what you are inspired by, I will get it as close as possible.
