Interview with Nico Kalwill

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Mixing is my number one activity. I'm also hired for very often for producing and tracking drums.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: The Beatles, Tchad Blake, Andy Wallace, George Martin, Serban Ghenea, Mark Stent, Bob Clearmountain, Eddie Kramer, Mark Ronson, Dave Fridmann, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder Rick Rubin, Dr. Dre.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I own a professional mixing studio based on ProTools HD. My converters are Apogee Symphony II and I can insert some exceptional pieces of analog gear. The space is acoustically measured and treated to give me an extremely accurate frequency response, which accompanied by AdamS2X, Genelec1032, DynaudioBM5A, YamahaNS10 and DangerousST monitoring, ensures a mix that translates well everywhere. In addition, I am associated with Panda, an A-class studio, with an SSL4000G+ console, and an outstanding collection of outboard gear such as Fairchild670, Neve1081, Urei1176, Pultec, Neve 2254, GML, API, etc...

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Excitement, punch, warmth, width, depth, extended low end, intensity, loudness, movement, texture, kick, air, drive, feeling, personality, space, balance, attitude, dimension, clarity, musicality, emotion.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: I can be very creative especially when the resources are limited. If I find a problem I take it as an opportunity. Although the famous quote "we'll fix it in the mix" has gained a bad connotation, I fix it in the mix!

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Indie Rock/Pop, Alternative, Trip-Hop, Dream Pop, R&B, Experimental Rock, Neo-Psychedelia, Folk, Indie Electronic.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Try to find the gem inside the artist's soul, and craft from there. Remember you are not a featured guest. We are there to strengthen their message, not to add our own!
