Interview with Nadhamuni Gayatri Bharath

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I deeply value the warmth and organic quality of analog sound, and when appropriate, I integrate analog techniques or gear to enhance depth and richness. I believe the best results come from combining the precision of digital with the character of analog to serve the emotional impact of the music.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: Many people assume that Indian classical vocals are rigid or purely traditional, or that improvisation is random. In reality, my work whether in Carnatic, Hindustani, or fusion contexts involves deep training, precise control, and creative improvisation (manodharma). Every note, phrase, and ornament is intentional, blending technical mastery with emotional expression, making each performance or recording unique and meaningful.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: My style blends Carnatic and Hindustani classical traditions with fusion, jazz, and world music. I combine spiritual depth, poetic expression, and improvisational freedom (manodharma) to create vocals that are soulful, dynamic, and cinematic. Whether it’s a devotional chant, a fusion track, or a soundtrack, my music carries both timeless authenticity and contemporary creativity.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Give each vocal part its own space in the mix. When recording Indian classical or fusion vocals, the richness of improvisation (manodharma) can easily become dense. Use subtle EQ, panning, and reverb to let each layer shine, so the emotional nuances and microtonal beauty of the voice are fully heard. Clarity allows the listener to truly feel the depth of the performance & richness of Indian classical music's improvisation.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My strongest skill is manodharma, the art of musical improvisation in Indian classical music. This allows me to create unique melodic phrases, spontaneous variations, and emotional expressions tailored to any composition. Whether it’s a devotional chant, a fusion track, I can weave vocals that feel organic, expressive, and deeply connected to the music’s mood. This skill makes each performance or recording one-of-a-kind, bringing a living, breathing quality to every project I collaborate on.

  11. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  12. A: I’m especially proud of my musical lineage and tutelage in Indian classical traditions, which grounds everything I do. Over the years, I’ve carried this heritage onto concert stages worldwide, performing across India, Australia, the USA, and beyond. I’ve had the honor of collaborating with leading jazz and world musicians, including as part of Shakti Spirit, and presenting Indian music at prestigious international music festivals. I was also selected as an AWMA (Australian Women in Music Awards) delegate, first Indian musician to get this prestigious recognition, which connected me with powerful voices shaping today’s music industry. Equally close to my heart are my original compositions, released across all major digital platforms — works that blend Carnatic and Hindustani roots with fusion, jazz, and spiritual themes. What makes me proud is not just the performances or accolades, but that I’ve been able to carry a timeless tradition into new global contexts, while keeping my own voice authentic and unique.

  13. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  14. A: “Bhavani” – a 13-minute spiritual composition I’ve written and set to tune, with 12 stanzas and unique instrumental arrangements between each. It’s a devotional work in praise of Goddess Bhavani, blending the depth of Indian classical tradition with contemporary soundscapes. This project is both a creative offering and a vision for powerful visual storytelling. Shakti Spirit – I’m also performing and recording with Shakti Spirit, a cross-cultural fusion band that brings together Indian classical elements with jazz and world music. We’ve been performing in Australia collaborating with legendary jazz artists, and creating music that bridges traditions with modern improvisation. Both projects reflect what I love most: honoring tradition while creating fresh, boundary-crossing music that speaks to today’s world.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: What I love most is the chance to bring a song to life taking an idea and shaping it with authentic vocals, improvisation, and emotion. Every project is different, and I enjoy finding the unique way my voice can serve the music.I love that music allows me to connect deeply with people, cultures, and spirit. Every time I sing, it feels like I’m channeling something timeless, and when that touches someone else’s heart, that’s the greatest reward. What I like most is collaboration — hearing someone’s vision and then adding my creativity to make it real. It’s magical to see how voices and ideas from different worlds come together in one track.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Look for a provider who not only delivers clean recordings but also brings artistic depth and cultural authenticity to your project. Share your vision openly — the more I understand your goals, the better I can craft vocals or compositions that fit seamlessly and elevate your track. Find someone who can give your project not just a voice, but a soul. When you hire me, you’re getting more than vocals — you’re getting centuries of tradition, improvisation, and emotion, shaped to match your story. My advice: choose someone who listens. A good collaboration is built on understanding your idea and then adding the right creative spark. I always encourage musicians to share references or feelings they want the music to carry — that’s how we create something unique together.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Carnatic, Hindustani & Jazz fusion

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I’m deeply inspired by the timeless artistry of M.S. Subbulakshmi, ML Vasanthakumari, Veena Sahasrabudhe and Kishori Amonkar, whose voices shaped the way Indian classical and devotional music is experienced. From the world of fusion, I draw inspiration from Ravi Shankar, John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, and Shakti, as well as contemporary innovators who blend tradition with global soundscapes.
