Interview with Brendan Duffey
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Bruce Dickinson's Mandrake project, which I mixed, mastered and Atmosed,
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on some material for Bruce Dickinson and some catalog mixes in Atmos.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I am still a firm believer in analog equipment and the sound it adds to the music. I know it sounds better and it also allows me to "play" my console while I work on the music as opposed to staring at a screen.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will put in all my effort and deliver my best everytime.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Working with people and music@
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you make my music sound like "xxxx"? My answer is I will make your music sound as best as possible, using your reference as a resource but the the deciding factor.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Successful engineers don't want to work with smaller artists. This couldn't be farther from the truth!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you expectations and where do you want your music to be taken?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let me know your expectations upfront. This helps me take your music to where you want it.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A pair of speakers, a pro tools rig with all my plugins and all of my SPL outboard gear.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working with recording for 30 years now. From being an assistant to owning a large-scale recording studio, I lived through the days of analog and the transition to digital. During this time I earned a BA in Recording arts and a Master's in music business from Berklee, I have worked independently my entire career, moving up the ranks to where I am now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Brendan Duffey’s mixing and mastering style blends the precision of modern tools with the soul of analog tradition. Growing up on consoles and working, I developed a deeply musical and instinctive approach, prioritizing feel, and sonics over trends. My approach is an integration of the best of new technologies with a large nod to the tried and true approach of traditional analog mixing.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: ve working with up-and-coming artists — that’s where the future of music lives. There’s a raw energy and hunger in emerging talent that sparks real innovation, and I find that incredibly inspiring. While I’ve had the honor of working with legends, I’m just as excited about discovering new voices and helping shape their sonic identity from the ground up. Fearless creativity is what drives music forward, and being part of that, whether with a known name or someone still making their first EP is what keeps my work exciting and meaningful.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Make music that makes you happy.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work across a wide range of genres, but I’m most often trusted with rock, metal, pop, hip-hop, R&B, and singer-songwriter projects. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with iconic artists like Bruce Dickinson, Kendrick Lamar, Sheryl Crow, and Mount Westmore, which has shaped my ability to adapt to different sonic identities while maintaining a high standard of quality. Whether it’s the raw power of a heavy mix, the finesse of a pop vocal, or the warmth and intimacy of an acoustic track, I bring the same attention to detail and emotional sensitivity to every genre. That said, I’m always open to new styles and creative challenges — great music is great music, and I love helping artists bring their vision to life no matter the category.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: At Brendan Duffey Audio, my strongest skill is the ability to deeply connect with both the artist and their music, translating that connection into sonically and emotionally powerful results. With nearly 30 years of experience mixing and mastering for Grammy-winning artists and chart-topping projects, I’ve learned that truly great work starts with listening — not just to the track, but to the person behind it. I take time to understand each client’s vision, personality, and goals, building a creative trust that allows the music to shine at its fullest potential. My hybrid approach blends analog warmth with modern precision, but it’s the human element, the personal attention and long-term relationships, that sets my work apart. Whether it’s your first song or your fiftieth, I treat every project like it matters, because it does.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: With nearly 30 years in the music industry, I bring a deep understanding of what makes a song connect — emotionally, sonically, and commercially. My experience spans genres and generations, with credits on Grammy-winning and multi-platinum projects for top-tier artists like Bruce Dickinson, Kendrick Lamar, Sheryl Crow, and many more. I bring not only technical expertise, but also a creative sensibility that helps shape the song’s identity while honoring the artist’s vision. Many of my clients are long-term collaborators who trust me to elevate their sound again and again, and together, we’ve achieved proven success in sales, streams, and chart positions worldwide. Whether it’s mixing or mastering, my role is to bring clarity, impact, and polish that makes your music stand out, and last.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process begins with a detailed conversation to understand each client’s vision, sonic preferences, and the emotional intent behind the music. This helps establish the right sonic footprint from the start. I take time to review any references or notes and ask targeted questions to ensure we're aligned creatively and technically. Once the direction is clear, I move into a meticulous mixing or mastering phase using a hybrid workflow that combines precision analog gear with advanced digital tools. Throughout the process, I keep communication open and collaborative, providing updates or previews when needed. Every project receives my full attention, with the goal of delivering flawless, personalized results that translate beautifully across all playback systems.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My mixing and mastering room is a finely tuned acoustic space designed for absolute sonic accuracy. It features a hybrid setup with top-tier analog gear and cutting-edge digital tools, from high-end converters and mastering-grade monitors to custom analog outboard, Every element is tailored to ensure your music translates flawlessly across all systems.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Anywhere from Bob Rock, Martin Birch, to Darcy Proper and Nicolas de Porcel
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My most common work is mixing and mastering for artists and labeels.
