Interview with MAVE

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: It’s "Slipping Through My Fingers" cover by the artist Eyeroze. It first garnered millions of streams, which proved my mixing skills to myself.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently working on an album for a German rapper.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet but I would be happy to meet some people in the future :)

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I’m 100% digital because every analog sound can be modeled by plugins nowadays. This makes me much more efficient with digital mixing.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You’ll have a smooth experience working with me. I’m polite and communicative at all times, and you'll receive your song quickly and in the best quality. Plus, if you're not satisfied, you can always get your money back. But that almost never happens.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The interesting people I meet, the amazing outcomes of the songs, and my love for music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What do we need to get started? To start, please send me all tracks of the song raw without effects. A brief description of what sound you want to achieve, a rough mix and a reference song are helpful, but do not need to be specified.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Mixing is often seen as a routine job, but it should be as creative as producing, to a certain extent.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What sound are you looking for? Do you want me to do pitch correction? do you want me to be creative with e few effects?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Find someone who is passionate about their work and treats you like the artist you are, not just another customer. Mixing your song should be more than just a routine task.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My setup includes my PC with all my plugins, my handy Eris monitors, a computer screen, and my Shure microphone with the Focusrite interface. I hope there’s electricity on that island! ^^

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started making music on my own in 2019. I was bored after losing my hobby (football) due to an injury. I tried recording with a cheap mic and no mixing knowledge, and quickly realized it sounded very bad. So, I learned to mix and master my own songs, and a friend of mine joined me. Once my sound became professional in 2021, I began offering my services. Initially, I started in my hometown, and then expanded to Fiverr. About a year ago, a label contacted me through Fiverr, and I’ve been mixing and mastering their songs ever since. Now, I’m here to experience working with new, talented musicians.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Professional but still a bit experimental to achieve a unique sound.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd love to work with Raf Camora because I love most of his songs and really admire his sound.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Proper gain staging and arranging the stereo field are key to achieving a great sound.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Most of the time, I work on pop, hip-hop, dancehall, R&B, and electronic music like house and techno.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is getting the best sound out of any vocal performance.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring professional sound and creative effects to every song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by organizing everything in my session. Then I move on to gain stage each part of the song, place them in the stereo field, and check for any pops or clicks in the audio material. Next, I work on pitch correction if needed. After that, I begin mixing the most important parts of the instrumental with the vocals. I apply EQ, compression, de-essing, saturation, delay, reverb, and effects if desired. Once the mix is done, I let my ears rest for a few hours or until the next day. Then I re-listen, and if everything sounds good, I master the song.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I'm working in a home studio, but it's set up very professionally, with acoustic treatment, high-quality monitors, headphones, and a Shure SM7B mic since I also record music for myself. I use Windows with Studio One as my DAW. I work completely "in the box" with some of the best plugins out there. I love Waves, FabFilter, and iZotope products.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I´m inspired by a bunch of mixing and mastering engineers like John Hanes and Rob Kinelski. or the german engineers Lex Barkey and Kingsize.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most of the time I mix and master the songs of my clients
