Jason Richmond is a Grammy nominated mixer, engineer and producer who has worked with such artists as The Avett Brothers, Joe Henry, Rising Appalachia, Nnenna Freelon, Margaret Glaspy, and Jake Fussell. Jason is grateful to work with talented musicians in beautiful spaces and be a part of the creative alchemy that brings forth a record.
I started down this path first by loving music, then playing it, then learning to make records. Going from North Carolina to the Bay Area and back again, with a few stops in between and more degrees than I needed, I find myself now with a sweet little mix studio in the heart of North Carolina, Grammy nominated, and proud to be working with the likes of Joe Henry, The Avett Brothers, Nnenna Freelon, Margaret Glaspy, Jake Fussell, The Steep Canyon Rangers, and Clem Snide.
I work mostly as a mix engineer, but also produce, track and master; in whatever capacity I’m working on an album, my goal is to combine intuitive, creative sense with technical mastery to help the artist realize their best vision.
I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Jason is absolutely the best mixing/mastering engineer! He'll take care of your precious tracks and make sure they shine as brightly as they possibly can. In addition to sensitive, creative ears and a high level of technical skill, he has very straightforward communication and is extremely efficient/timely. I highly recommend him.

I wouldn't trust my music with anyone other than Jason. Through his expert mixes, he brings out the beauty of my original songs. He has a way of knowing just what my voice and all the instruments need and where they should go. Never overdone, always natural (just how I like them), beautiful, and done efficiently in a timely manner. I wholeheartedly recommend him.

Not only is Jason awesome at what he does, he's great to work with to boot. He was able to translate my incoherent ramblings into a great mix and was super cool about anything I suggested. Really great experience.

Over the past few years, I've had Jason do all my mixing and mastering. I can always count on him to deliver a beautiful result. I'm super picky about the details and he always works with me to get everything just right. Don't hesitate to hire him for your next music project.

I'm so pleased to have chosen Jason to mix and master my latest song. There were some pretty serious issues with the violin recording and the harmony vocals I sent to him but he was able to smooth all of those over beautifully. He is a dream to work with--very efficient, an excellent problem solver, and patient through changes large and small. Most importantly, he grasped my overall creative direction completely, which fully enabled my song to come to life. I couldn't recommend him more highly.

Jason has worked on some of my favorite artist's records so I was happy for him to put his ears on my song. Super communicative and underpromised/over-delivered on the timeline! I'll be sending more over as they come! Thank you Jason!

Jason did another great job mixing a jazz/funk song for me. He locks into the feel of a song and comes up with a great mix. The horns sound great, and the overall sound is top notch with quick turnaround!

Interview with Jason Richmond
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on all types of music, but I generally get called for Americana, jazz, and world music projects.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Although I have a strong technical background in recording, I'm a musician first and I bring a musical, artistic, and creative approach to what I work on.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: The ability to listen closely to a song and find it's direction.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I hope that I bring a fresh approach and unique perspective to any given song, but the main desire is that I find the strength of the artist and the song itself and enhance that in a way that not on captures what the artist is trying to create but surpasses it.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work out of many studios, but do most of my mixing in my home studio. I have a hybrid system running Pro Tools HD and sum through a summing mixer with Apogee Symphony converters. I utilize a variety of outboard gear including Chandler TG2 preamps, Chandler LTD-2 master compressor, Dramastic Obsidian Compressor, Crane Song Ibis EQ, and a variety of other outboard gear. I generally use plugins from Massey, Sound Toys, Waves, Brainworx, and Avid. I monitor through a Crane Song Avocet and Focal Twin monitors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by all types of music when it is built on great musicianship, brilliant songs, and interesting production. Some people I'm inspired by include; Tchad Blake, Bill Frisell, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, D'Angelo, Paul Simon, Jacquire King, Quincy Jones, and Brad Mehldau. Just to name a few.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Primarily more and more of my work is mixing, although I still do quite a bit of tracking and production work.
