Jason Richmond on SoundBetter

Jason Richmond is a producer, engineer and mixer who has worked with such artists as The Avett Brothers, Joe Henry, Branford Marsalis, The Steep Canyon Rangers, The Bad Plus, and The Foreign Exchange. Jason is grateful to work with talented musicians in beautiful spaces and be a part of the creative alchemy that brings forth a record.

After years spent working as a musician, Jason was inspired to turn to music production and took a position as engineer at the Banff Centre in Alberta, where he worked with jazz artists Dave Douglas, Clarence Penn, Hank Roberts and Ben Monder. He left Banff for a position as Chief Recording Engineer at Sound Pure Studios in Durham, North Carolina where he refined his skills working with a host of local, national, and international musicians.

Although accustomed to working with a wide range of artists, Jason is particularly versed at working with the sounds of Jazz, Americana, and World Music. The last few years have seen him engineer several albums for Grammy-nominated Jazz vocalist Kate McGarry, as well as co-produce and engineer a solo album with Dom Flemons (founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops), Prospect Hill. Shortly after this release he was approached by Grammy-winning Malian Kora master Mamadou Diabate to engineer and produce Griot Classique, an exquisite collection of solo Kora compositions. In the past year Jason has been fortunate to work on two records with Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Joe Henry.

Jason is known for his versatility in making great records happen in whatever space he is provided, and has been called on to work in everything from world-class studios to remote locations.

Great work from Jason - he is professional, prompt, and reliable, but along with that has a great sensibility and artistic view of the work. I couldn't be happier with the work he has just completed on a 16 track project. Deals with feedback and notes really well, and has done his upmost to deliver my artistic vision of the songs.

I enjoyed working with Jason to finalize one of my tracks. I'll be hitting him up again, for sure. I decided to go with Jason because of his experience with Americana music. Jason provided me with the context I needed to understand how he came up with the mix. A great interaction.

Interview with Jason Richmond

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: Although I have a strong technical background in recording, I'm a musician first and I bring a musical, artistic, and creative approach to what I work on.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I work on all types of music, but I generally get called for Americana, jazz, and world music projects.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: The ability to listen closely to a song and find it's direction.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I hope that I bring a fresh approach and unique perspective to any given song, but the main desire is that I find the strength of the artist and the song itself and enhance that in a way that not on captures what the artist is trying to create but surpasses it.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I work out of many studios, but do most of my mixing in my home studio. I have a hybrid system running Pro Tools HD and sum through a summing mixer with Apogee Symphony converters. I utilize a variety of outboard gear including Chandler TG2 preamps, Chandler LTD-2 master compressor, Dramastic Obsidian Compressor, Crane Song Ibis EQ, and a variety of other outboard gear. I generally use plugins from Massey, Sound Toys, Waves, Brainworx, and Avid. I monitor through a Crane Song Avocet and Focal Twin monitors.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I'm inspired by all types of music when it is built on great musicianship, brilliant songs, and interesting production. Some people I'm inspired by include; Tchad Blake, Bill Frisell, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, D'Angelo, Paul Simon, Jacquire King, Quincy Jones, and Brad Mehldau. Just to name a few.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Primarily more and more of my work is mixing, although I still do quite a bit of tracking and production work.
