Interview with Josue Davis
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am really proud of a client I had. He sends over a demo, sends a reference. He couldn't sing or play any instrument but he had great lyrical ideas. So I locked myself in the studio for a week, send him the first draft, which included my vocals, and the new produced track, but with his lyrics. This song has made me the most proud in a long time! Since the lyrics were so deeply connected with me. Thank you for choosing me for the last song to wrap up the EP.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working at the moment on a Japanese Classical piano piece for an anime. I have finished composing the piano part, and now I am finishing arranging the strings part for these piece.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog has that warm vintage sound that makes records feel good like back in the early days of recorded music. Digital because we live in a digital world and it is becoming easier to create, track, mix, edit, etc.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I "promise" to pay special attention to your project, because it is your baby therefore it is now my duty to help nurture it and watch it grow. Therefore, we become music partners.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Hearing that a client/artists is satisfied and in love with their song after I worked on it!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I got a few recently asking if I was a musician. The answer is Yes, I play piano & guitar!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That us providers can work for free and send samples for free. Creating music takes time and energy. I like to work with clients where we can build a mutual respect for one another!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What kind of music inspires you and how can I service your song to make it... sound better!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I grew up in Bolivia but moved to the Netherlands in 2019 and attended school in Amsterdam, at United Pop Amsterdam but I started with music when I was 11 when I first picked up a guitar. So that would make it 10 years!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is your style. It's all about being of service to others with the expertise I acquired over the years!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My set up changes quite frequently. I just added my new best friend, the Apollo Twin X with most of it's glorious plug-ins. I recently added the BBC Core Library, Kontakt. Life has officially changed for the better.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Would love to work with Jacob Collier and possibly might one day! I respect his genius and would love to observe his creative process.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Turning a basic idea into a professionally ready record.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice to a customer looking to hire someone like me is to be upfront about the style and vibe you are looking for. If you want a track that's aggressive and synthetic, say so. If you want something more dynamic and organic, be sure to let me know. I'm happy to work with you to create whatever you'd like... as long as I know what I'm aiming for.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: SM7, UAD Apollo, MacBook Pro, Fender Strat, DT 770s
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd like to work with Jacob Collier. I think his acoustic recordings sound great, as do his more fully produced work. I think his voice and arranging skills are killer as well, and I think it would be a ton of fun to bounce ideas around with someone who takes songcraft as seriously as he seems to.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I reference a lot of different music when I'm working. I don't like to copy anyone else's work, but I like to compare low end, vocal level, etc so I know my mixes will be competitive.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: These past few projects I've gotten have been Rock, Pop, Reggaeton, Synth-wave, Acoustic Ballad, you name it, they call me for it!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my strongest skill comes from the composition aspect. Ideas flow to me really easy, once I have an idea that I like, I can quickly start developing the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can bring anything to the lyrics, melodies or harmonic progressions in terms of the composition of the song. So, I view making music as painting a picture. The music is the paint and production is the canvas. You can't have one without the other. I marry both components to a song and create the art!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the original work, preferably the demo file and begin to build from there. Each project is different but the flow for me is to lock myself in the studio and don't leave until I have a hit.
