Interview with Estudio 434

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I`m proud of every project that I do, but to name one, Sosò she is an upcoming artist that we produced her first song and also recorded bass, mix and master, and then played with the band the very same song for the first time alive.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm mixing two bands at the moment and producing an artist locally in Ciudad de Buenos Aires Argentina where the studio is located

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet, I'm a new user, hope to do it soon.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I have to say both because it depends, the context is always leading the answer, some people need to feel the feedback provided by an amp, some people need to have the overall control of a session to later find the soundscape, analog sounds great because you can touch the hardware and is more intuitive approach, the digital is always flexible and scalable and portable.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To do my best to achieve the best version of the art they bring to me

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The most rewarding aspect of this kind of work is helping people to create and materialize an artistic vision.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: People usually ask about how many hours do I put in a project, and I always say the same, the art needs time, and I don't charge by the hours but by project.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Well thats a tricky one because having a background in physics people tends to believe this is just some plugins and some tricks and thats it, not a physical phenomenon that occurs in a medium, that have an impact in the perception of the listener.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: My main question is "what do you want to achieve with this piece of art you bring to the table?"

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: My advice is mainly to newer musicians, I would say, review the catalog of the professional and check the roles played in those productions, not only names but mainly roles.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Drum, Bass, Guitar,

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I`m in music business from a long time now, at least 19 years, firstly as a musician, later as a roadie, later on as a live engineer, and from the last 6 years in the studio exclusively editing mixing mastering now as a studio owner.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I should say a Relaxed style because I don't like to rush things up, music takes time, is not working hours from 9 to 5, maybe an artist needs extra time, an extra sessions, to rest for a day or a week, to rehearse a part, to rewrite an idea.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would work with whoever put his/her trust in me rather than a already mainstream artist.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: I would say one of my most usual sound checks if for Phase Rotation as a pre mastering session, but also I would say duplicate a bass guitar and work with a 200 hz and below track for achieving the bass mechanical reproduction and have another bass track from 200 hz and above to create a more character specific bass tone.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock, Indie Rock, Rock Pop, and Alternative

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Mixing and Editing.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: If needed I can always play bass, give some production insights, help to achieve the artist vision.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Record, Edit, Mix, Master. Now having said that we try to help with production techniques, some ideas if the artist doesn't have a producer or if the band or artist is still trying to figure out the song or the

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: We use mainly Mac and Logic Pro X as our main tool, we record with Focusrite Clarett 8 Pre and Clarett Octo Pre as our main system. We have a few Shure Mics, an AKG mainly for voices, quite a few Sennheiser ( older and newer versions) a Ludwig VistaLite Clear Drum Kit from the late 70´s Lucite, some boutique amps like ENGL, Orange, Vox, Vintage Electric valve amps for recording and reamping. Some Pre for basses. We work only with legal software. We are currently endorsers for SoundID ( Sonarworks )

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: It would be unfair to name names here, but I must say anyone that delivers a great work rather than names or Money.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: My work is usually as mixing engineer, not only for music from our studio but elsewhere, sometimes our customers record in another location and want them to mix with us, because of the approach we provide and our rates.
