Tony Sharkey on SoundBetter

Up and coming Rock music producer/mixer with over 15 years of experience.

Big drums, thunderous bass, clear in-your-face vocals and wailing guitars, that's what I shoot for when I'm working on your song. I will identify the core of your song whether it's the vocals, an element of the music, or the drums, and make sure that everything surrounding that core is lifting it up rather than fighting or taking attention away from it.

My career started in a basement studio in 2006 recording indie bands in my area. In 2011 I landed an internship at a commercial studio where I spent nearly a decade rising from Runner to Head of Engineering before leaving to found my own business, TBM Audio Services. I've spent most of my career working with up and coming artists including Vogue Villains, ISSA Award Winner Chris Andres, and underground Canadian Rock powerhouse Under The Mountain, and I'm ready to take on your project next.

We recorded a full length album with Tony in two studios, and with his mobile rig at two other locations. I have nothing but good things to say about him and how much fun we had putting our album together.
Tony has an in depth knowledge of the technical aspects of his craft, resulting in radio quality, professional sounding recordings. Also, his ear is next level! He is able to communicate what he hears in a way that keeps your confidence while at the same time pushing you to attempt your best performance. He is a solid, good person and we look forward to the next project!

Tony is a gem. It's not easy finding an extremely competent engineer that is also inspiring to be around. Tony's patience, attitude and sunny disposition leave so much room for artistic freedom and expression, it's a joy working with him. I recommend him to even the most bitter curmudgeon of musicians. (Who knows... you might just learn something from him too... I did)

I’ve known Tony and have been doing work on and off with him for years. Incredibly competent and easy to work with, and he has a great understanding of what you’re trying to achieve. Working with him in the studio in-person, he has a way to achieve the best out of you, and that’s something not all engineers have. The last work he did for me was mainly communication over the phone and text, and any note that I gave him for a particular song, he was all over it. I’m very happy with the result that he sent back to me on these 10 songs (and they haven’t even been mastered yet!).

I had the pleasure of working with Tony when he came and recorded our band using his mobile rig. He’s highly knowledgeable about engineering and mixing techniques, an excellent communicator, and importantly, a kind and positive person. We received revisions quickly, and he made the record sound amazing. He has top notch gear to get the sounds you’re after, and will serve your music.

This guy gets it! I've had the pleasure to work with Tony a lot and he's been fantastic! Not only is he a great producer, recording and mixing engineer, but also great to work with and a great dude. You'll never regret hiring him, but you will regret NOT hiring him

Interview with Tony Sharkey

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Under The Mountain's 2025 album Ancients is one that I am particularly proud of. I was the Producer, Engineer, and Mixer for that one and it was an incredible experience because all four members of the band as well as myself were on the same page in terms of what we wanted for the final result and the level of collaboration between the whole team was incredible. Those things combined let to a spectacular final product that I still like to crank up, even after hearing it thousands of times during the creation of it.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Tools are tools. Sometimes an analogue tool is what the job needs and sometimes a digital tool is what the job needs. Limiting oneself to either domain only ever constricts your options, so I embrace both.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: What I like most about my job is being able to help an artist's vision come to reality, and taking it above and beyond what they thought it could be.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What inspired you to write this song? How do you want this mix to make the listener feel?

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started out with a home studio setup in the 2000's working with bands out of my basement. In 2011 I landed an internship with a local commercial recording studio where I grew into the role of head engineer and studio manager within a few years. I left that company in 2018 to grow as a freelance producer and mixer which is what I still do today.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I would love to work with Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats because from the sounds of their current discography, especially their second album Blood Lust, they take the time to get the songs and the sounds dialed in properly in the studio and that always makes for an interesting, fun, and educational recording session.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: If every member of the group is playing their instrument throughout the whole song then someone is playing too much.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I usually work on Rock music and I am comfortable achieving a modern aggressive and punchy sound as well as a vintage vibey and gritty sound.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I bring focus and clarity to a song by making sure all elements of the arrangement are lifting up the heart of it, whether that heart is an element of the song such as Vocals or the Bass line, or if the heart of the song lies in the combined performance from the group.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I have a hybrid studio that blends the best of the analogue and digital worlds together. I have the best digital tools from companies such as Fabfilter, Universal Audio, Purafied Audio, Waves and more. My acoustically designed mixing space is centered around a pair of Avantone CLA10 monitors and a 32 channel mixing console for some analogue summing and flavor as well as some interesting outboard effects units such as a Roland RE-501 Chorus Echo, Yamaha SPX 900 digital effects unit, and other effects chosen by me because they bring something to the soundscape that my digital tools don't.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I am inspired by may other producers and mix engineers such as Eric Valentine, Eddie Kramer, Tom Lord-Alge, Andy Wallace, and many more.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I most frequently help artists to focus the arrangements of their songs by identifying elements that are shifting the listeners attention away from the heart of the production and working with the artists to find ways to adjust those elements.
