Endorse Joey DolanI hire this motherf*cker for his dedication to getting sh*t done right. Call him. He wants to be part of what you're doing. You want him involved!
I hire Joey for both my bands, Made n' America and the Dave Keckhut Band. He shows up early and stays to the end, very reliable and always brings a solid performance. He's the guy!
Joey's got a great ear and a lot of insight. He's a pleasure to work with every time. I personally give him a thumbs up for whoever is asking.
Interview with Joey Dolan
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Inkless began with a couple of guitar tracks from Dany Breault out of Canada, he is brilliant, and we exchanged work via the Internet. We're 7 albums in as of 3/2023 and there doesn't seem to be an end to making more music. I co-write, play bass, occasional drum programming, mixing and mastering.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm always working on something, that's the joy of music. There are always notes or stages to play.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Andy Haller.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: This depends on who we're listening to and who mixed it.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll be there.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The smiles during final playback.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Are you available on (insert date here). That's the most common question. Answers vary but it always works out.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I don't know what other people think.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do I need to bring a DI or an amp?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If you can, share some audio files.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: This question is ridiculous.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started young with dreams of grandeur. I have had some very memorable moments. At this point in my career I hope to keep recording with fellow artists, performing where I can and maybe get some more tour dates under my belt.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: It's just me. I don't subscribe to a particular genre, I play what feels right, I guess I get lucky because people seem to like it.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Some alive, some passed. The list is long. I've been fortunate enough to play alongside some great and dear friends over the years, today I'd like to play alongside Steve Rothery, Dan Zanes and David Gilmour.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Just get it done. You're taking too long to make your album. It's music, just make it happen.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Jazz, rock, pop, prog and instrumental.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I make pretty good coffee.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Usually one of two options. I play what I'm asked to play or I inject my vision and we collaborate to get the finished product the artist wants.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Recording: I get tracks from artists by way of the Internet, balance them when necessary and mix - add bass, mix and master. Live: I typically agree to terms, learn the music and perform the show. Doesn't everyone?
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: A small self-made production that does just what I need. Most of my recording at my personal studio is just bass-works so nothing magical.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I really enjoy progressive artists.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Record and perform on bass guitar, assemble mix and master albums.
