Luke Peterson on SoundBetter

I'm a session drummer with 25 years experience. I work with artists and producers to support the song and not overpower it. I play a variety of genres (rock, pop, country, jazz, folk) and have toured with artists from country to hip hop. Whether you are looking for a single drum track, EP, or a whole album, I'll be happy to work with you.

Welcome to my page! Thanks for stopping by and I hope we can work together. A little about me, I'm a drummer with 25 years of experience. I specialize in Pop, Rock, Country, Folk, Funk, and Blues. I've worked with producers/artists/engineers to create live drum tracks that fit to the song. My strength is being able to adapt to the vision of the client. While I have my own style, I do really well with adapting to a direction the client envisions their for their song. While I don't tour anymore, some artists I've played for include NF, Je'kob, Brandon Bee, The Banner Days, Beth Whitney, Bradford Loomis, Holly Starr, Circleslide, Stomptown Revival.

Luke is the best drummer I’ve ever known or heard, and he’s an even better person. We’ve toured, recorded, written, and produced together, and even after years, I’m amazed at the creativity, adaptability, and precision he brings every time!

Interview with Luke Peterson

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm working on a personal project right now. It's really fun!

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both!

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started as a live musician and made friends with a few producers who hired me. I've been playing for 25 years and recording for 20.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: In the pocket with a good feel.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I would like to work with John Mayer. He always has amazing musicians on his records. Recently I've been into Marcus King and I think he would be awesome to work with as well.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Make sure the drums are tuned.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I work on rock, pop, americana, country, and blues.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Being able to adapt to the song and lock in with a click.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring energy, pocket, and feel to the song.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I like to hear what the artist/producers wants from the drum track. A few examples of other songs that are similar always help. From there I'll listen to the track and take notes. I'll track the drums and then send over the individual wav files.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I have various drums and sizes to fit the sound you need. I like vintage drums and most of my drums are 1940s - 1960s. Cymbals I use are Zildjian, Sabian, and Istanbul. For mics I use Shure, UA, Rode and have access to many other mics if there is a specific one you are looking for. I use Ableton Live to track drums in my home studio.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I'm inspired by lots of musicians, but the top ones I find myself emulating are Dave Grohl, Aaron Sterling, Nate Smith, Ash Soan, and Steve Jordan.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Live drum tracking.
