Alex Williams on SoundBetter

I am a Grammy winning recording engineer, mixer and producer based in Los Angeles with over 15 years of experience working with some of the top artists in the music industry.

I am a freelance engineer who came up as a staff engineer at The Village in West LA, where I had the pleasure of working on everything from pop and hip hop to full band tracking sessions and orchestral film scores. I specialize in recording, mixing, mastering, editing, audio restoration, vocal editing and tuning. I work primarily in Pro Tools but have a strong working knowledge of both Logic and Ableton Live.

Contact me through the green button above and let's get to work.

Alex is a great engineer. I've been working with him for 5+ years now and it's amazing how quick and efficient he is as an engineer. He's not only a solid recording and mixing engineer, but an amazing musician.

Interview with Alex Williams

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was a recording engineer and mixer on Jon Batiste’s album ‘We Are’, which won several Grammys, including Album of the Year.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both! There’s nothing like analog warmth and glue, but digital also has many advantages. I like to utilize a good mix of both, such as mixing in the box and printing stems through analog summing. I also think it is worthwhile to have a good solid analog front end(mic, pre and compressor) for recording vocals and instruments.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will always put my all into my work while respecting your process and prioritizing your vision.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Working on a variety of great music with amazing artists and other music industry professionals!

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: An sm57, Neve 1073, Tube Tech CL-1B, GML 8200 and Studer A800

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I have been a musician since I began learning guitar at 10 years old, and started producing my own songs at 15. I attended Pasadena City College, majoring in music theory before transferring to USC Thornton School of Music where I attained a Bachelors degree in Music Industry. In 2007, I was hired as a live sound engineer at the Key Club(now One Oak) in West Hollywood where I ran monitors and front-of-house for a variety of show. In 2009, I was hired as a runner at The Village Studios in West LA. I worked my way up to one of the chief engineers at The Village and went completely freelance in 2019. In 2021, I received a Grammy for my work on Jon Batiste’s album ‘We Are’.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: There are many artists I would love to work with. Hard to name just one. I just love working on good music with good people.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Step outside the box and go with your instincts.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I work mostly on rock, Indy pop and electronic music.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Attention to detail and a finely tuned ear.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I bring a musical ear, attention to detail and a unique creative acumen.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: It really depends on the project and whether I’m producing, recording, mixing or mastering. Whatever it is, I try to be as efficient as possible without sacrificing quality. I take pride in being meticulous and doing great work, whether it’s tuning a vocal or mixing and mastering a song.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I have a production/mix studio with lots of synths including a modular synth system, guitars/basses, and other instruments. Lots of plugins including Waves, Soundtoys, Fab-Filter, iZotope, Plugin Alliance, Arturia, Celemony, Arturia, Natice Instruments, Output and more! I mix mostly in the box but have an analog summing setup with a DIYRE summing box, two Heritage audio neve pres, and a TK audio BC501 stereo analog compressor. I have various other outboard fx including an Eventide H3000 and H&K Replex.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Trent Reznor, Dr. Dre, Billie Eilish & Finneas, Aphex Twin, Odesza, Trentemøller and many many more!

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Recording everything from vocals to full band tracking and full orchestra. Mixing and mastering.
