Interview with Eddie Mess

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am incredibly proud of several key projects where I handled everything from the initial sound design and production to the final mix and master. A standout moment was releasing an EP on Deborah De Luca’s label at her personal invitation, which received massive support from Mha Iri. Another highlight is my 'Awakenings' EP on Reload Records, which Sam Wolfe played out constantly, even sending me videos of the crowd’s amazing reaction. Additionally, my 'Nobody' EP gained support from titans like Layton Giordani and Adam Beyer. Seeing these tracks performed by world-class DJs in front of thousands of people is the ultimate validation of the sonic quality and energy I strive to bring to every single project I work on.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently producing a Peak-time Techno EP for a major European label, mixing an Afro-Melodic House project for a rising talent, and scouting new tracks for my own labels.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I focus on delivering my own specialized sound, but I always respect any provider who puts quality and the client's vision above everything else.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Hybrid. I love the surgical precision and recall of digital (UAD, FabFilter), but as a fan of classic techno, I believe you need that analog-style saturation and "warmth" to make electronic music feel human and expensive.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I treat your music as if it were a release on my own label. I don’t stop until the track has the impact, clarity, and "soul" it needs to compete in today’s market. Your satisfaction is my priority.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The transformation. I love taking a raw, inspired bedroom demo and turning it into a powerful weapon that sounds like it belongs on a mainstage. Seeing my clients' tracks being supported by big DJs is the ultimate reward.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "Will this track get signed to a major label?" My answer is always honest: I provide the professional, label-ready sonic quality that is required for a signing, but the success also depends on your unique creative idea and branding. I give you the best possible tool to succeed.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mastering is "magic dust" that can save a poor mix. True professional sound starts with the right sample selection and a clean mixdown. I always encourage my clients to get the mix as close as possible; I’m here to take it from 90% to 110%.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is the primary goal for this track (e.g., club play, label signing, streaming)? Can you provide 2-3 reference tracks that capture the sonic energy you want? What is the one specific thing you feel is missing from your current version?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who understands the 'after-life' of a track. As a label owner, I don't just see a project as a set of stems; I see it as a potential release. Hire someone who can help you bridge the gap between a bedroom demo and a professional record that labels actually want to sign.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My own builded Professional Studio PC (loaded with my go-to plugins), a pair of Genelec or ATC monitors for honest translation, a Moog Sub 37 for that irreplaceable analog low-end, an Universal Audio Apollo interface, and a solid pair of Beyerdynamic headphones for late-night sessions.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years, wearing many hats: DJ, radio editor, producer, and record label owner. This journey through both the popular and underground sides of electronic music has given me a deep understanding of the industry, leading to releases on top labels like Frequenza, Solamente, and Reload, and support from the world's biggest DJs.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: A blend of underground credibility and professional polish. My background in radio and more popular genres taught me the importance of hooks and clean arrangements, while my DJ career ensures that every track I touch has the energy needed to command a dancefloor.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Enrico Sangiuliano. His ability to create massive, cinematic atmospheres while maintaining a driving techno pulse is legendary. As a sound designer, I find his use of "silence" and space incredibly inspiring.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Respect the headroom. Many producers try to fix a weak energy by pushing everything into a limiter. In my experience as a label owner, the tracks that truly "slam" in a club are the ones with dynamic range and a perfectly balanced kick-bass relationship. Build the energy in the arrangement, not just the master fader.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: My core expertise lies in the underground scene: Peak-time Techno, Raw/Hypnotic Techno, and Melodic, Afro & Organic House. However, thanks to my radio background, I am also highly proficient in Afro House, Organic House, and more polished, popular electronic genres.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is my '360-degree' perspective on music. With over 20 years of experience as a producer, active DJ, and radio professional, combined with running my own record labels, I know exactly what makes a track work—not just in the studio, but on the dancefloor and on the airwaves. This allows me to translate any 'vibe' into a polished, professional production that meets the high technical standards of major labels and sounds massive on large-scale sound systems.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Over 20 years of "dancefloor knowledge." I don’t just make a song sound clean; I make it work in a club environment, ensuring the low-end is powerful and the arrangement keeps the energy moving.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My process is built on clear communication and a label-oriented mindset. Vision & Strategy: We start with a deep dive into your goals. I analyze your reference tracks to understand the exact 'sonic signature' you’re aiming for—whether it’s for a specific label, a festival stage, or streaming. Technical Execution: For mixing and mastering, I focus on creating a powerful low-end and a wide, immersive soundstage. For production, I build the groove and energy layer-by-layer, keeping you updated with drafts to ensure we’re on the right path. Refinement: I offer a collaborative feedback loop. We fine-tune the details until the track sounds exactly how you imagined—or better. Final Delivery: You receive high-quality, pre-mastered or mastered WAV files, perfectly optimized for club systems, radio, and digital platforms.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work in a professionally treated acoustic environment equipped with Adam Audio and Kali Audio (LP-8 V2) monitoring to ensure clinical precision and perfect translation across all sound systems. My hybrid workflow combines high-end digital precision with the harmonic character of top-tier analog emulations from UAD, Softube, Plugin Alliance, FabFilter, Waves, and Soundtoys. This setup allows me to achieve the warm, punchy, and wide soundstage required for modern, competitive dance music.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am deeply inspired by the surgical precision of Adam Beyer and Layton Giordani, the atmospheric storytelling of Enrico Sangiuliano, and the raw energy of T78. I also draw significant inspiration from the 'Afterlife' sound and the groove-heavy productions of Keinemusik. My goal is to bridge the gap between these world-class sonic profiles and my clients' unique creative visions.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in high-end mixing, mastering, and full-scale ghost production for the underground electronic scene. My daily work involves taking raw ideas and transforming them into 'label-ready' weapons that meet the sonic standards of top-tier imprints. As a record label owner and active DJ, I don't just process audio—I ensure every track has the professional punch, clarity, and energy needed to succeed on Beatport and command a festival-sized dancefloor.
