Julien Fade on SoundBetter

Specialised in Pop & Electronic Dance Music; 6+ years of industry experience and associate degree at the Amsterdam Electronic Music Academy; Worked with countless Record Labels & Artists; Devoted to his craft.

Hey I'm Julien ;)

Since my last years in school it became clear to me that I wouldn't want to end up in a nine-to-five job doing work I don't like for too little money. By then I was already producing music for a couple of years on my DAW, so I decided to move to Amsterdam, the city of dance music, to pursuit my dream of becoming a successful producer. I studied at the Amsterdam Electronic Music Academy and ever since I'm spending every day in the studio improving my craft. I started to spend quality time with people from the industry and work my way up.

I think why I do what I do is the most important question. Because someone who knows his why, will always figure out the how.

Different projects always come with different issues, a different skillset thats needed and a different approach. I specialised in facing those challenges & giving every project the treatment it deserves to become outstanding. Wether you want a full production from scratch, have a vision in mind and need help with realising it, or just need a second set of ears to finalise your existing project to make it radio-ready: I'm your guy.

I'll be your music producer, remixer, vocal editor, songwriter or mixing/mastering engineer.

Julien is a great music producer.
You can expect modern sound design, clean mixes, powerful masters, and a high production quality overall.
But besides his technical skills he‘s also a great person to work with. He‘s very ambitious and passionated about music and you can really feel that he puts heart and soul into every project.

Interview with Julien Fade

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm the producer behind MATTN & HIDDN's latest track: "Closer To You"

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A lot of exciting projects for my own artist profile as well as some big co-productions for other people.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: There are a lot of fantastic vocalists to work with. One of them is Jason Earley, I had the pleasure of release a song with him.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog gear is awesome, it gives so much character. Due to the high prices, I work with digital emulations of old hardware. That's my way of combining the best of both worlds.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To give my very best. Every time.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Working with people from all over the world is awesome. There is so much talent, so much potential. Giving good ideas the care they deserve makes everyone involved happy.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: A lot of questions are about the pricing, but I'm not competing on price. There will always be someone charging less money, but you pay with frustration.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception about me owning a guitar is that I should know how to play it. I don't haha. Looks pretty damn cool tho.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask what they hope the result would be like. At this point references, idea snippets or anything that translates the vision is welcome.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't worry too much. We'll make it work! Promised ;)

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: MacBook Pro; Headphones; Speakers; Microphone; & Iced Coffee... yeah that's not gear but I mean it's still pretty awesome.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been making music since the middle of high school. Honestly, ever since I have forgotten what I did all day long before that. After high school I studied electronic music production for 2 years in Amsterdam and graduated successfully.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Timeless. Thats my goal.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: From the producer side for sure: Zedd, Clavin Harris & The Chainsmokers. I would also be very happy to work with legendary singers such as Halsey, Dua Lipa or Zara Larsson.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Pay attention to how the music feels to you. When it feels right, it is right.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: My main focus is most definitely pop & house music. Nonetheless, expanding the comfort zone beyond that usually leads to stunning results.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is work ethic. Once a project is started, we will bring it to an end.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Often I'm producing an instrumental for an exciting idea. Sometimes I come up with an idea from scratch. Besides that I'm also very passionate about writing toplines and lyrics for a production, I don't sing though ;)

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: In the first step it's important to me to figure out what the client really wants. Sometimes it's hard to put it into words thats why I usually ask for reference songs or other practical ways of showing it. Once we started working I like to lay out a first idea of what it could sound like to ensure that it's the right direction. From there on I keep the other side involved in the process because at the end it only matters what they think of it.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I'm currently working from my home studio in Amsterdam. It's on the 7th floor with a nice view over the city. My setup consists of a MacBook Pro with Ableton Live & Logic Pro installed, a pair of Yamaha HS8 studio monitors as well as a pair of RCF PA Speakers, an audio interface, the Ableton Push 2 controller, my Squire by Fender Classic Telecaster and a USB microphone. Oh and the Adam SP5 headphones, thanks Adam for the gift they are amazing!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Artists like Zedd, Calvin Harris & The Chainsmokers inspire me a lot. They always put the singer in the spotlight and surround them with their production. The instrumental never fights for attention. Minimalism is key here.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most of the time I work with Singers & Songwriters. They typically want to make their amazing vocals into full-fetched productions to finally be able to play it to their audience. Outside of that, Mixing or Mastering is the second most common request.
