Jesse Payne on SoundBetter

Let's get together and make a record.

Starting in a home-studio in 2009, I've grown my career to a professional level in Portland, Oregon and have worked with artists ranging from local bands making their first demos to national and internationally touring bands with albums that have hit the Billboard Top 100 charts. I enjoy working across various genres and perform in metal and country bands.

This was our second time working with Jesse and it was just as much of a pleasure as the first. He's quick, responsive, and truly cared about getting the most out of the audio we sent over - some of which needed a lot of help. Will absolutely be working with him again when it comes time for our next projects.

Another breeze of a job working with Jesco!
He's quite the songster and his songs are super fun to play on.
Any time revisions were necessary, he made sure to give very specific details so the next take was the right take!

Interview with Jesse Payne

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Too much time dwelling on certain details will end up hurting the mix / your record more than it will help. Don't sweat the small stuff.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Kurt Ballou, Steve Albini, Brad Boatright, Justin Longerbeam, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Though I primarily work in-the-box, I have a deep love and respect for the analog world and try to bring as much of that to my mixes as possible.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise is to represent your truest sound to the best of my abilities. I love to contribute to the production process, but at the end of the day, the client makes the final decisions.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love the challenge of making a record sound cohesive and glueing the whole project together.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What are your favorite records that you draw influence from for your sound?

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Multi-pattern large diaphragm condenser, a pre-amp and a compressor. Anything else is a distraction.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I work out of Falcon Recording, which has been around since 1985. It has an impressive catalog of outboard gear including 2 Distressors, 4 1176's of varying manufacturers, an LA2A, UA Converters, API & Neve Pre-Amps and ATC SCM25a Pro Monitors.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: Recording & Mixing
