Shehrose on SoundBetter

A lover of music of all kinds, Shehrose uses his autodidactic skills to adapt to all sorts of musical situations as a composer, performer, and audio engineer. And owing to his empathetic nature, he'd rather help others most of the time. Shoot him a message, and he'll see how he may be able to help or advise.

Shehrose takes a Mahayana Buddhist approach to music-making: what heals him is to heal others from unnecessary suffering. So he strongly believes music occupies a special place where sound behaves as a kind of deep tissue masseuse for the mind (or subtle bodies).

A clarinetist of Western classical training who taught himself tenor and alto saxophone, Shehrose incorporates those skills (as well as his experience with jazz piano) into a production aesthetic influenced by both film composition and instrumental electronic music.

Moreover, having been a strong mathematics and science student throughout his life with a logic degree from Brown University, Shehrose also practices engineering with a special mixing and mastering processing chain he has fine-tuned over the years (though it will always stand to change and improve).

He works primarily by interest in projects. This essentially means the work must accord to his values (no undue swearing, violence, vulgar references, etc.). For projects he truly believes in, he can offer discounts depending on the cost of living of one's residential country/state/province.

In the interest of transparency and fair play, Shehrose offers a free demo sample to give a taste of what his work can do with your material or instructions. *Only send him materials after you've both agreed to a demo to protect your work.*

Just finished a second collaboration with Shehrose.
Amazing experience! The musical ideas are fresh and open to exploration.
Shehrose has a deep respect for music as an art form and never looses sight of the direction the piece needs to go, but always open to new ideas and concepts.
The work flow, again, has been very professional and kind.
Hope to meet Shehrose again in the future for another crazy collaboration.

Working with Shehrose was an absolute pleasure! I mixed and mastered 5 tracks, and the vision and communication to achieve that was crystal clear. Shehrose is a very warm and understanding person to communicate with and the work never felt rushed or pushed, the goal was always for the best possible sound and that shows in their work.

Would highly recommend working with Shehrose and look forward to doing so again!

Working for Shehrose was a breeze! They started a conversation with me in the very early stages of their project, so when it was time for me to add bass tracks, I was well aware what was needed from me. They sent multiple versions of their sheet music and audio tracks, and gave me helpful instruction about what they were looking for from me without being restrictive. I would work for Shehrose again any time!

Interview with Shehrose

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: My up-and-coming record label, Earcake Sounds. It's a whimsical affair, one that searches for supposed laws of musical nutrition. One of its tracks ("Forgive Self-Pity") has already been selected by ReverbNation as a chart-topping folk song for March 2024. Listen here to the full album: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?app=desktop&list=OLAK5uy_nIVY-mlrGoYCeObeGr1T9LTkHxGeIbTUU There's another record label in the works as well called Mama Bird Songs, a sonic exploration of lullabies from around the globe.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Everyone I've worked with thus far (in no particular order): Nathaniel Wolkstein - Emanuele Filippi - Ger Lema - Aaron Holthus - Gene Jackson - Aubrey Johnson - LEX - Joe Carnell - Efim - Edouard Chaize - Manuel Rodriguez-Riva - Marina Rechkalova - Rini (Harini Raghavan) - Musina Ebobissé

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will try my best :)

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: "What do you think I can offer you?" and after giving an example of what I could do in that regard, "Do you demonstrably believe I can achieve it?"

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: No style. The 'jeet kune do' of music — or at least I aspire to this. Novelty is my friend, tradition my teacher.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Gold Panda. He proves good headphone music can be done well so long as one loves music and takes the time to dissect it in whichever way engages oneself effectively.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Mix softly and master with enough headroom for a light limiter chain.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Minimalist electronic / classical / jazz music.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Finding the middle ground between accessibility and interest. This comes from a teenage fascination (in private, of course) with creating atonal techno. Those experiences helped me find moments of sonority within some "odor"-neutralizing tableau of "coffee bean" sound.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Something catchy but not fatiguing, I hope. Sometimes, though, the fatigue can reign supreme. This is why I offer virtually unlimited revisions, so that if a client finds some problem that I also identify in agreement, then I can work to improve the project and learn from the experience for my musical enrichment.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: It depends on how I'm feeling, a method that proves to increase the longevity of the music-making practice. So sometimes I'll start with a rhythm, other times with a melody or harmony. And these can all be influenced by the sound design. Having said that, I often — owing to my lo-fi past — deliberately find ugly sounds and form something decidedly intriguing to the ear. Then the sound design process can work to enhance the musical content. This process is akin to the jazz player's need for a song to work in every key: "work for any kind of sound".

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I use a Presonus Quantum 2626 audio interface with primarily an AKG C214 condenser microphone cushioned by an Aston Halo vocal booth. The room's walls are insulated from the inside and the doors are further protected by a slidable sound blanket.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Jon Hopkins (especially for his album "Immunity"), Max Cooper (his album "Emergence"), Sylvain Rifflet (for his "Refocus"), Mouse on Mars (notably their album "Parastrophics").
