Interview with Felipe Barrera

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: "Silly Road" by Gen is probably what I'm most proud of. I've worked on smaller projects, but that one was special because I was involved in every aspect, and it was mixed by Kyle Mangeles and John Greenham

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Finishing an album and the usual tasks like tuning vocals and so on

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Maria Elisa Ayerbe is one of the best mixing engineers I've worked with

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Ideally, it's best to mix them, but to be honest, I basically do everything digitally

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I’ll do everything within my reach to make their project shine

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I guess it's that blend of freedom and creativity

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Usually, the questions are about the completion date and revisions. I try to strike a balance between delivering the best final product and meeting the required deadlines

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Sometimes it's hard for me to let go of projects and feel that they are truly finished

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Aside from the basics like ideas and budget, there’s no specific template. Each client is unique in their style

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I guess it would be to never think that they have silly questions or ideas. There's value in every idea, or something can be drawn from it that could lead to something bigger

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My laptop, some headphones, and a small MIDI controller are all I need

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started in 2020, producing smaller projects in Chile, and now I've had the chance to work with people like John Greenham and Maria Elisa Ayerbe

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Minimalist, surprising, and ever-changing

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: To produce an album for Olivia Rodrigo someday

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Absorb everything you can and put your own spin on it

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, folk-pop, and related genres are what I work on the most

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I think the most significant thing I can achieve is being present at every stage. I can compose, be part of the sound design, record, and produce to ensure the greatest cohesion from the conception of the idea

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I try to bring soul and creativity. It's becoming more difficult, but with good communication, it's more than possible

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: It always depends on the type of work. I usually try to have the client explain everything they already have, whether it's a demo, a piano track that needs improvement, or whatever they want. The most important thing is to understand the starting point, agree on that, and move forward from there

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I mainly focus on doing everything digitally, but to get the best possible quality, I use this setup: Neumann KH80 monitors, an Apollo X6 interface, the Presonus BlueTube as a preamp, Sennheiser HD650 open-back headphones for monitoring, and a TLM 103

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Illangelo and FINNEAS are my main inspirations when it comes to producing

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I usually produce from scratch, including composition, but I also do things like composing a piano or synth track, tuning vocals, or whatever the client needs
