Giampaolo Scatozza on SoundBetter

My musical background ranges from electronic music, jazz, pop, world music. Giampaolo has worked in his career with icons of the London pop music as Paul Young, Tom Jones, Curiosity Killed the Cat, Groove Armada, Emma Bunton but also in the jazz world Trevor Watts, Evan Parker, Kellylee Evans, Four80East, Sundar Viswanathan, John Medeski.

I'm a session drummer and I have played/recorded with Tom Jones, Groove Armada, Paul Young, Joe Sample, Emma Bunton (Spice Girls) and many other amazing artists.

I have my own recording studio with a good selection of professional drum sets ( I endorse Pearl drums ) and UFIP Cymbals.

I also collect vintage snare drums (Ludwig, Gretsch, Leedy, Slingerland).

My microphones are Neumann, Royer, Se Electronics, Shure and my preamps are Telefunken, Neumann, Focusrite, TL Audio.

Interview with Giampaolo Scatozza

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: There are many, but I would highlight 'BroadWay Sleep,' a project where I served as co-producer and drummer. The recording process was incredibly creative, and we collaborated with some of the best session musicians in Toronto at that time. Mixed and Master by Jack Guy (Duran Duran, INXS, Spice Girls etc....)

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A new recording (album) for a new client in the UK, a Multitrack SamplePack and my own new album.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I am new on Soundbetter so I would say no yet.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Today, it's all about going digital. It's easier, and you can incorporate the analog vibe during the mixing and mastering stages

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Their satisfaction with the drum track is crucial, and I guarantee it will be delivered on time

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I enjoy challenges, so I appreciate it when the artist pushes me in a new musical direction

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: I prefer to communicate over the phone; I find sound advice is better conveyed verbally than through email or WhatsApp. I like to capture the producer vibe with a quick 5-minute chat.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: Snare Kick Hi Hat a guitar and a bass.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: OMG, so many memories! I started doing remote drum tracks back in London in 1996 from my bedroom, using just 4 mics, a small Teac mixer, and a minidisc. Then ProTools came along, and the rest is history.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Versatile, tasty, groovy.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: So many. Seal, Tower of Power, Prince (too late), Cinematic Orchestra, Ibrahim Maalouf, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Daniel Lanois, Foo Fighters.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Listen to mixes at low volume and in mono to check for tightness and coherence

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Pop, Rock, Indie, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Afro, Electronic/pop (Massive Attack).

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: When asked about my strongest skill, I often suggest clients to provide feedback. Many have told me that I have a strong groove, pocket, and style, which helps bring their music to life.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I aim to bring a phat drum sound, rhythm, glue, solidity, and finesse to every song.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: When I receive an MP3 track from a client, I begin by writing a chart for the song. I then record one or two takes and send them to the artist for feedback. Based on their input, I layer another couple of takes to refine the final product. This collaborative process ensures that the drums perfectly complement the artist’s vision and the overall feel of the track

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I use and endorse Pearl Drums, Ufip Cymbals, Evans skins, and SE ELECTRONICS mics. My setup includes two Master Custom Pearl Maple drum kits. One features big and deep toms and a large kick drum, perfect for powerful, resonant sounds. The other kit is smaller and ideal for capturing the classic vibe of Beatles tracks. This diverse range of equipment allows me to deliver high-quality drum recordings for any project. I also have vintage Neumann and Telefunken preamps. Regarding snare drums, I have a vast collection, including many vintage Ludwigs, Slingerlands, Tama, and Pearl snares. (Don't tell my wife; she doesn't know!)

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: There are so many . Brian Eno, Trevor Horn, Mark Ronson, Daniel Lanois, Jack Antonoff drummers like Abe Laboriel Jnr, Steve Jordan, Brian Blade and many others.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I specialize in recording drum tracks for clients from all over the world. With my professional recording setup and extensive experience, I deliver high-quality drum recordings whether you're an independent artist or a production company

  • BAD DRUM TAKE BUT I STILL LIKE ITJun 15, 2024

You know when you play an amazing take, and the artist doesn't like it?

    This is one of those.

The song comes from a session I played last week.

The artist wanted a lighter snare sound than usual, so I decided to use a Pearl Master Custom Maple.

    What do you think?

Do you like the snare sound?
