I've worked with Jeff many times over the years. Whether he's wearing the hat of producer, programmer, writer, player, Jeff harnesses your creative energy, provides motivation, and turns your raw materials into something great.

Jeff’s been in the music business - producing records, licensing his songs to film & TV, as a journalist & radio host, & as a professor of songwriting & production - for over 20 years. The man is a marvel in the studio: great communicator, tasty groovemaker, enthusiastic cheerleader, tireless idea-generator - what else could you ask for in a producer?

Jeff is the BEST! He is so creative and enthusiastic about projects, and yet also so easy to work with. He can help transform your songs into something so much better than you could have imagined - it's like magic! I've worked with Jeff on various projects for the past year+, and couldn't recommend a better collaborator.

I am going on my third year now with Jeff as my professor at Pacific Lutheran University. Throughout my time with him he has really helped me come into my own as a musician by sharing his broad knowledge of the music industry and music production. I look forward to what he has coming next.

I have personally collaborated with Jeff for 4 years now and with his mentorship I have not only been able to gain confidence and skills within music composition but have also gained real advice and resources to jumpstart a career in music making. Through Jeff you will not only learn everything and anything about the art of music (or the art of anything you want to master and produce) but you will learn the business too and you will be able to navigate your way to accomplish your dreams and goals. I recommend Jeff as an artistic creative coach ESPECIALLY for music; make your dreams a reality.

Jeff has a fantastic ear and a talent for bringing out the best in any artistic endeavor he has a hand in! I was a former songwriting and music production student of his and he helped many of my songs/recordings come to life over the years!

The practical and spiritual help Jeff offers can make the difference - not just to your project but your self and how you approach future projects. It's like he talks directly to the voices in your head to figure out what you really want.

Jeff makes my mediocre sound great, and my good sound stellar! I trust him with my music, and when I send a tune I know it’s in good hands.

Interview with electron love theory

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: A benefit song with Kendra Ericka, a number #1 Billboard artist + world class drummer Kenny Aronoff (McCartney, Elton John, Gaga, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.)— for MusiCares, BLM, Feeding America and Doctors Without Borders.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Besides being a producer, I teach songwriting and recording to college students. It's a joy and a thrill to turn young people onto the magic and potential of modern recording. Helping students win national awards, make albums and clue into the biz is always wonderful. I'm very proud to be a teacher and mentor as well as a producer and artist.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will focus decades of studio experience into your project to make your song as amazing as it deserves to be.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Be sure the producer understands you and what you're going for— and that you personally vibe with them.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Mid- and downtempo singer-songerwriter tracks. That said, I've also done plenty of rock, some dance music, funkiness, etc.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I'd love to work with any artist who truly puts their heart into their work. When music is written and recorded with vulnerability, courage and craft, it becomes transcendent.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Oh Wonder, Maggie Rogers, Lourde, Counting Crows, Everything but the Girl, U2. The list goes on. Forever.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I help sing-songwriters realize an elevated vision of their music.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Understanding the truth of the music and where it wants to go.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: First, I listen to a sketch of your song. If I believe I can step it up in a big way, and our sound/ style/ vibe mixes well, then we'll hop on a Zoom to discuss. Once I understand your vision and direction, you'll send me the basic tracks-- vocals, guitar, midi, etc. As I move through the production process, I'll send updates and we'll connect to discuss until we're both ecstatic about the song and we take it across the finish line.

  21. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  22. A: Robert Smith of Defy Recordings. This guy is a big time pro with an amazing heart and love for music. And his ear is out of this world.

  23. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  24. A: Digital. So much more flexibility.

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: I love working with passionate songwriters who have something to say.

  27. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  28. A: It's easy for anyone with a laptop and a few plug-in's to be a producer and do it well.

  29. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  30. A: Why did you write this song? Who do you hope to connect with through your music? What do you hope to communicate?

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: I started playing as a punk kid, recording onto a four track in the 80s. I've played in tons of bands, worked with zillions of artists, won awards, had thousands of placements on film and tv. I love music. And I want to help others take their songs to next level.

  33. Q: How would you describe your style?

  34. A: Heart based music.

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: The bassline is the bridge between the melody and rhythm. Having one ear on each connects the song in critical ways.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: 30+ years of songwriting and recording experience. A vibe that serves the song. The song is always key. From there, the production is the icing that takes it to the moon.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Pro tools with tons of software, synths, samplers, etc.
