Interview with Fierce & Bright Music

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I have not done anything I'm not proud of... which may sound strange. But That's how I am. I am proud of every creative spark that goes out into the world. The world needs music and a richness of diversity. I love being part of that.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on Album number 8 and I'm writing, recording and producing it at my studio. I am writing pieces for film and television and for briefs. I just wrote and recorded a children's song, which was new for me.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Absolutely, but I like to keep those folks a tightly guarded secret so they don't get too busy to work with me .

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Well. I'm a huge fan of analog for the warmth, however, most of my friends who own lots of analog gear are always sending it off to be repaired or trying to trouble shoot a crackling sound or a channel that won't work . The availability and affordability of high quality digital gear has really mad the world of recording accessible to more people.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To surprise and delight you. To elevate your work in such a way that you a jumping out of your skin with excitement.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love creating out of thin air. Music blows my mind over and over again.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long will it take me to do the job? I maintain communication with you ( the buyer ) and I give you updates as well as a solid time frame for completion.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it's not a real job. I work all the time. I love it, but it is most definitely 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I have a list of questions I ask in order to get clarity on the job. It depends if it's a vocal job or a song writing job.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be clear and concise in your communication. Provide inspiration tracks so I know what you are going for. Hire me for something I'm good at (LOL) Hire me because you love my voice, sound and style already and we are golden.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I'm going out on a limb and assuming we have electricity on this imaginary island. I would take my Martin 000 14 guitar, Mac book pro, Logic ProX, my apogee Duet and headphones.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I came at this relatively late and I am definitely a slow bloomer. I started off singing, then I began to write songs with other people, doing lyrics and melodies. I toured with a band. I learnt to play guitar at 30 and started writing on guitar, then touring solo after that.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I would say I have a voice ferocious and sweet and a percussive guitar style. I call it a melting pot mix of sounds that include the stylistic traditions of folk, blues, pop, soul and jazz .

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: hmmm ....David Guetta - He has such a great sound and he's amazing...

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Less is more. I love to have every sound add something to the song.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Well I tend to love music that doesn't fit into a

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: A fresh perspective, Fresh ears and eyes. My voice is such a varied and dynamic instrument. I love to see what the songs and arrangements bring out in me.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Oh.. that depends what I am working on. I tend to dive in for intense sessions and then take a break top listen back with fresh ears. I'm kind of an all in person.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I use Logic ProX with an Apogee Duet. I have some Steven Slate software, Steven Slate Virtual mic and a Miktek Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone. KRK speakers. I have a 61 key weighted keyboard, native instruments software and a bunch of guitars.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Well that is tough. Ani Difranco has always been someone I have admired. Both her creative output and her indie spin on the world. I love the songwriting and vocals of Anais Mitchell and Patty Griffin. Nina Simone is one of my all time favourites. Buddy and. Julie Miller, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Sia, Beyonce, Daniel Lanois, lumineers... Way too many to count.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Mostly I record lead vocals and write songs. I love to put my unique stamp on a song and make a song 'come alive' with my voice.
