Interview with Wendy
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Tell me as much detailed as what you want.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: 1. Check out their previous/ sample work. Good work means a higher chance of good quality for the customers. 2. Speak with them as much as possible, tell them as much detailed as what they want. 3. Specifically for synthesizers, each of them might have completely different magic of making different sounds, so it would be better to ask for a demo to make sure it sounds like what you want before going to final production.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop with all my DAWs installed. An external hard drive with my favorite sound libraries. A midi keyboard. A microphone for the voice of either mine or the sands. A set of headphones. Now I can create anything. :D
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been a chemist dedicated to academia for > 10 years. Got a Ph.D. in chemical engineering last year, and just stepped into the semiconductor industry to start making all the chemistry work in real life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Wild, non-conventional, strongly emotional.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Jacob Collier. Music genius.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When getting stuck or running out of ideas, put it aside, completely wipe it out of your mind, and come back later: be patient like building up a mansion from small stones, and finally, you will get the best piece of artwork.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Soundtracks.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Composing music for films or games to illustrate a scene. Synthesizers.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: As many ideas as I can think of. Not just limited to keyboard/synthesizers, but also instrumental arrangement, mixing suggestions, or even female backing vocals if needed. To make the song sound unique, different from other similar types of music. Create a colorful arrangement for a simple melody.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. Communicate with customers on their needs in as much detail as possible: talk about the genre/feelings of the music they want, any specific requirements in song length, any preferred instrumental setups, any game/video clips for BGM? 2. Compose 1st version, send out to the customers to get feedback. 3. Revise if needed, and final mixing and mastering.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Gears: Yamaha HS7 monitors, Shure SM7B microphone and a bunch of instrumental microphones, thousands of sound libraries, Arturia Keylab midi keyboard & synthesizer.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Jacob Collier. Yoko Kanno.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am offering keyboard, synthesizer, and piano tracks to add unique spices for the songs. Also giving advice on the instrumental and sound arrangement. I'm also offering game music composing and mixing, especially RPG games with a storyline and multiple scenes.
