Interview with Zach Holmes-Little Guy Studios
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. Such a time saver. And so easy to go back and change anything you like.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Well, you already know my whole studio setup consists of about that many pieces of gear :) So probably a satellite phone, water filtration system, a big hat, a big knife, and my guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I was paid $200 at 10 years old to be a lead singer on a children's album. I knew then that I would be doing music the rest of my life. In 2013 I moved to Seoul, South Korea and was hired as a producer with an advertising studio that specialized in creating 30 second pop songs for worldwide commercials. I was then a featured artist in Kia Motors Worldwide commercials. I now live in Nashville, TN and currently a songwriter/producer for Toby Mac's record label "Gotee Records". I work mostly for the band known as "RICHLIN"
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would say I'm a chameleon. I've had to work on so many styles over the years in advertising that I've learned what it takes to adapt quickly to whatever song I'm working on.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Tyler Joseph and Paul Meany just to absorb some of their process. Jon Bellion to learn his vocal sample process. I'd also love to work with Chris Martin because his music has been such a big part of my life for the last 20 years.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't decide what melodies/sounds/libraries you're going to use before you start the song. Push play and start improvising until something fresh happens. It's more time consuming but I try to find sounds I've never used before each time I'm adding a layer to the song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: For Production I usually work on song's similar to "imagine dragons", "twenty one pilots", and songs that have a cinematic/orchestral vibe. For vocal recording I work on every genre.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocals and Production. Being able to match 'that sound' you are looking for.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my best every time. I don't care how well known you are or if you're just getting started and as artist. I'll give it 100% every time. I have a unique position of singing topline for worldwide advertising and can bring that skill to the song as well.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For production I usually receive a phone recording of the artist's idea and go from there. They just tell me a song (or a few songs) that have the same sound they would would like for reference. Sometimes what I give make them is perfect the first time and sometimes the artist would like to change a sound here and there. For topline vocals I usually receive the instrumental track along with a piano melody for reference, along with a reference to what singer they would like me to imitate.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Yamaha HS8's with matching subwoofer. Manley Reference Cardioid microphone. Focusrite Clarett Interface. iMac. Nektar Impact 61 midi controller. 1961 Gibson Acoustic Guitar. Fully custom electric guitar.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Tyler Joseph of "Twenty One Pilots" and Paul Meany of "MuteMath". Anyone who can write AND produce brilliant songs.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Full Production house. I usually receive an iphone recording of someone singing their idea with a guitar or piano, I then make a full song from that. I also sing topline for advertising/demos.
