Interview with Marla M.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: In 2018, I released an EP as a solo artist that I wrote and co-produced with Brad Hill (Maren Morris, Brothers Osborne) and Joe Fox (Liz Rose Music). Several of the songs from the EP were featured on Spotify and Apple curated playlists, which helped the EP garner attention. It has since been streamed over 700,000 times across all platforms! It was a project that I had been writing for a few years and worked very passionately on with my co-producers.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on recording new music and writing for other artists.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would recommend Grant Vogelfanger and Brittany Hadley! I write and record with both of them on a regular basis and they are incredibly talented vocalists, songwriters and musicians.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to work diligently and efficiently to provide you with the product you are looking for! I will communicate clearly and be attentive to what it is you want your song to sound like.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would ask a customer to clearly define what they are looking for from me and to have a distinct vision.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: The first time I ever performed I was 4-years-old and I sang "My Heart Will Go On." Celine Dion was and continues to be one of my heroes! I began voice lessons when I was 8-years-old and I have been commercially and classically training ever since. I also started playing piano when I was 4 and guitar when I was 14. I moved to Nashville when I was 17, but I have been writing and recording in Nashville since I was 15. I completed my degree at Belmont University in 3.5 years, which included working at Capitol Records, and I have been writing, recording and releasing music as a solo artist ever since. In the last few years, I have been writing for other artists as well as myself.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My voice is very versatile but is accustomed to singing in the style of country/pop. I have a warm, somewhat airy and distinct tone that allows me to navigate various genres. My musical upbringing consisted of listening to all genres including country, pop, rock and jazz, which is evident in my voice. I am an alto and am very comfortable singing low but I also have a large range.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Eric Church to see his writing and recording process and I would also love to work with Dua Lipa, Lady A and Carole King!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I generally sing and write country and pop music, but I have experience in a wide variety of genres!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skills include finding the best harmonies and singing lead vocals with strength, clarity and nuance! I also am skilled in singing and writing melodic hooks as well as being detail oriented.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I strive to bring character and nuance to every song, as well as my best effort every time!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by all the studio musicians and songwriters in Nashville who are the backbone of the record industry!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I most commonly provide lead vocals, background vocals, toplining, lyrics and music for my clients.
