Maxwell Harlor on SoundBetter

I am a producer out of Cincinnati and I absolutely love producing Pop, Hip Hop & Pop Punk.

I’ve been into pop punk since I was little. I grew up on Green Day, Blink 182, Sum 41 etc. Producing in this genre comes so easy to me and it is one that I really enjoy! I will help produce your vision from start to finish, exactly how you want it! I’ve been playing “punk” guitar for about 12 years and know the genre well. I also have plenty of experience in pop/hip hop. Check out some of my pop work with HARLOR.

Interview with Maxwell Harlor

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: A lot of my projects that I've been proud of have been unreleased stuff! A song I've worked on with Poo Bear and Des Rocs have been ones that I've been super excited about. I am hoping they come out soon!

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I will tend to ask what your vision is for your song and what I can do to help get you there? Who are your inspirations? What are you looking for in your music path?

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: I would say my style is upbeat pop punk! I am also very fond of creating slow, emotional songs as well.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I usually work on pop punk and pop music. I produce pop music for my duo “HARLOR”. Unfortunately, we don’t do pop punk! But that’s why I started this, to have it as my creative outlet. I create my own pop punk music, but am still mustering up that courage to put it out haha.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: I'd say my strongest skill is creating that catchy hook, whether that be musically, melodically or lyrically.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I have a home studio set up. I run out of a Volt 276 with KrK rokit 5 speakers and an SD-1 Mic.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: KennyHoopla, Green Day, Sum 41 and Blink-182 are huge inspirations for pop punk. Jon Bellion and Louis bell are huge inspirations for me in the pop/hip hop world.

  15. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  16. A: I’m currently working on music for my duo HARLOR and some pop punk records for Christian Allain! Stay tuned

  17. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  18. A: Brent Kolatalo for mixing and Nick Bianco for songwriting! I work with both of them and they’re incredible at what they do

  19. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  20. A: I personally use digital because that’s all I have access to. However, I have some great analog emulations that get you extremely close to the real thing!

  21. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  22. A: My promise is to get you exactly what your vision is! I want to make sure you’re walking away with your hit!

  23. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  24. A: Just being able to do what I love everyday! Creating music and having fun in the process

  25. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  26. A: I’d say the biggest misconception is that there isn’t much work involved when it comes to making a record; that it’s something easy. I know for me, when I work on a record, I put an immense amount of time and effort into it. It’s not an easy thing in the slightest

  27. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  28. A: You get what you pay for. There are a lot of amazing providers in this website, and as you’ll see most of them may cost quite a bit, me included. However, the final product will always be well worth it. Invest in yourself if you want to be successful!

  29. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  30. A: I would take an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, a keyboard, my laptop and a usb pre amp! That would be all I would need

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: Funny enough, I was really unclear of what my path was. Fortunately, we had met the production crew Katalyst and signed a production deal with them, which has really helped me. I’ve been in the “industry” I’d say for about 2, going on 3 years.

  33. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  34. A: My dream would be Green Day. I love their music and they were my biggest inspiration growing up. Every time they came out with a new song, I immediately went to learn it on guitar!

  35. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  36. A: Less is more! That was one thing that took me awhile to grasp and it has helped me tremendously

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I tend to bring life and energy to tracks. Giving clients that “wow” factor is something I really strive for

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: I tend to start with whatever inspires me first, usually being the chorus. If that’s the case, I’ll usually start there and work backwards

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I mainly either help produce a section of the song, or the whole song itself
