Maxwell Harlor on SoundBetter

I am a producer out of Cincinnati and I absolutely love producing Pop Punk.

I’ve been into pop punk since I was little. I grew up on Green Day, Blink 182, Sum 41 etc. Producing in this genre comes so easy to me and it is one that I really enjoy! I will help produce your vision from start to finish, exactly how you want it! I’ve been playing “punk” guitar for about 12 years and know the genre well.

Interview with Maxwell Harlor

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The pop punk records that I have worked on with Christian Allain. They aren’t out yet at the moment, but they are some of my best work production wise and I love how they are turning out. Follow him to stay updated on their release!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working on music for my duo HARLOR and some pop punk records for Christian Allain! Stay tuned

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Brent Kolatalo for mixing and Nick Bianco for songwriting! I work with both of them and they’re incredible at what they do

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I personally use digital because that’s all I have access to. However, I have some great analog emulations that get you extremely close to the real thing!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to get you exactly what your vision is! I want to make sure you’re walking away with your hit!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Just being able to do what I love everyday! Creating music and having fun in the process

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: I am new to this so I haven’t had any questions asked! But hey, you could be the first! (:

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I’d say the biggest misconception is that there isn’t much work involved when it comes to making a record; that it’s something easy. I know for me, when I work on a record, I put an immense amount of time and effort into it. It’s not an easy thing in the slightest

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I will tend to ask what your vision is for your song and what I can do to help get you there

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: You get what you pay for. There are a lot of amazing providers in this website, and as you’ll see most of them may cost quite a bit, me included. However, the final product will always be well worth it. Invest in yourself if you want to be successful!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I would take an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, a keyboard, my laptop and a usb pre amp! That would be all I would need

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Funny enough, I was really unclear of what my path was. Fortunately, we had met the production crew Katalyst and signed a production deal with them, which has really helped me. I’ve been in the “industry” I’d say for about 2, going on 3 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I would say my style is upbeat pop punk!

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: My dream would be Green Day. I love their music and they were my biggest inspiration growing up. Every time they came out with a new song, I immediately went to learn it on guitar!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Less is more! That was one thing that took me awhile to grasp and it has helped me tremendously

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on pop punk and pop music. I produce pop music for my duo “HARLOR”. Unfortunately, we don’t do pop punk! But that’s why I started this, to have it as my creative outlet

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I’d say my strongest skill is guitar production. Giving you those catchy hook guitars and octaves is something I love doing

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I tend to bring life and energy to tracks. Giving clients that “wow” factor is something I really strive for

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I tend to start with whatever inspires me first, usually being the chorus. If that’s the case, I’ll usually start there and work backwards

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a home studio set up. I run out of a focusrite 2i2 with KrK rokit 5 speakers.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: KennyHoopla, Green Day, Sum 41 and Blink-182 are huge inspirations

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mainly either help produce a section of the song, or the whole song itself
