Interview with Lele F
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: - How does this song make you feel? - How do you want it to make others feel? - Do you have song references? - Where do you want backing vocals? What parts should be left alone?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have the song 90% finished (pre mix) so I can add accurate vocals that match your phrasing and arrangement. If possible, send me chord charts along with the reference mix.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: R&B and pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have different vocal qualities and can copy different vocalists to create the feeling of multiple singers in a production.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I always try to listen and feel the song to make my own impression before asking the Producer/Writer questions about their vision. I like to hear what the song means to the and if they have an intention (commercial, artistic or other reasons). Do they want my creativity or do they know exactly what they want from me? Then I build harmonies, adlibs and stacks with different textures.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Adele, Ariana Grande, Beyonce, FKA Twigs, Ciara, Erykah Badu, Passion Pit, Jewel
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Neumann TLM103, Audient ID14, Protools, Ableton Live, Adobe Audition
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Headphones, laptop, Sm58, audio interface, tablet
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Diary entry at 6 years old: "I want to be a singer-dancer-actress-fairy princess when I grow up". At age 11 I was performing musical numbers and the national anthem to audiences of around 1000, and by 16 my own songs on national TV. A live jazz stint then moved to NYC and started working with full time producers... ALWAYS performing my own writing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Shamelessly sensual.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: A rapper who has dancers in the live show! Count me in!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Have a consistent filing system!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Heart, soul, swagger, cheek.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocals and writing/performing top lines.
