Cindy Zhang on SoundBetter

I'm a versatile singer-songwriter specializing in Jazz, R&B, and Pop. I've worked with Grammy Award Winning Producer, Kamau Kenyatta (Gregory Porter) and can record high quality vocals for your demo, as well as arrange + sing background vocals.

(NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR JOBS)

======================================

I got my start in music through 15+ years of training in classical and jazz, so I pay a lot of attention to harmony and voice leading. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to vocals, so I can guarantee that the stems I deliver are professionally recorded, edited, and ready for mixing.

I normally make music in the Jazz/R&B/Neo-soul styles, but I've had a lot of experience singing songs in the top-40 pop/singer-songwriter genres as well. Contact me and we can make it happen :)

Cindy has been a pleasure to work with! Very clear on what she was after, straight from the outset. She sent over all the files/info I needed to get to work right away. Despite the difference in timezones, she responded quickly with constructive feedback which really helped me do my job to the best of my ability, resulting in a couple of songs that we were both really happy with. On top of all this, she's a great songwriter and singer! Would definitely work with Cindy again in the future!

Interview with Cindy Zhang

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: I think a lot of people in music perceive that more notes/faster playing = more skillful playing and more riffs/higher notes = better singer. I don't believe music is for showcasing skill as much as it is about telling a story. Being a good musician also means being a good listener, making space, and holding back when you need to.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I just finished my album a couple of days ago! Because of quarantine, I ended up remotely collaborating with a lot of musicians I met through SoundBetter, Instagram, and mutual friends to complete it :)

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm in love with Suwon Yim, Judy Shin, and AK Keys for keyboards—they're so great at coming up with tasteful Jazz/Neo-soul type stuff that doesn't get in the way of vocals. For producers, I loved working with Josh Jacobson and Natty Reeves. I think it's important to have your producer be really good at either keys/guitar to add a great rhythm section to your song.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: In general, my music is heavily influenced by Jazz. But because I also listen to a lot of R&B/K-Pop, you can hear a lot of those genres in my music as well.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: To make sure we're on the same page from the very beginning, it would be great for the client to come up with a well-defined aesthetic for the vocals they want for their song.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: According to my mom, I started singing for fun ever since I was 2. I got formally started in music through 15+ years of training in classical violin. Later on, I developed my love for jazz after studying with Kamau Kenyatta (Gregory Porter's producer). I've only been playing guitar for a little less than 3 years but it's helped me so much in writing. Nowadays I spend half my time as an Engineer/Product Manager for a Silicon Valley tech company 🤓 and the other half as a musician.

  13. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  14. A: I’m most proud of producing and mixing “Moon River” (feat. Josh Berkeley) by myself and then getting it selected for an editorial playlist on Spotify. I had no idea that was going to happen with one of the first projects I did!

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: Stems that are professionally recorded, edited, and ready for mixing.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: That I get to collab with so many cool musicians around the world!

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What are you listening to these days?

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, guitar, mic (+ cables/interface I guess?), and the voice memos app on my phone. Is there safe drinking water on this island?

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: In terms of singing, I try to use a good combination of different placements (chest, head, mixed) to bring as many dynamics as I can into a song. My chest voice sounds really different from my head voice so I spend a lot of time trying to figure out which placement to use depending on the lyrics I'm singing or mood of the song.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: For singers, definitely Mac Ayres, Lianne La Havas, Luke Chiang, or Marie Dahlstrom. Their voices are just so buttery! As for producers/other musicians, I would die if I could work with Tom Misch, Sam Kim, Hiromi.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: It’s different for every single song, but it usually starts with something simple on guitar and a vocal melody. These days I rarely write anything down on paper, and just record everything using the voice memos app on my phone. Once I have a good idea down, I enter all the chords into Sibelius and export a piano part as a midi using the "realize chords" feature. Then I go record my vocals on top of that.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't fall too much in love with parts of a song that were the hardest to create, and subtract when you need to!! Space can add so much oomph to a song. Listening on crappy speakers on your phone or laptop is also really helpful.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Organization. Keeping things in order makes my workflow so much faster.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Arrangement—I work really hard to make sure that different parts of a song are dynamic enough to keep the listener engaged.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I use a Neumann TLM 102 with a reflection filter, pop filter, shock mount and record everything through my Scarlett 8i6. It's a very humble setup, but my room is very small so there's barely any room for echo :)

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: On the jazz side, I take a lot of inspiration from the smooth voices and melodies of Julie London and Billie Holiday, as well as Bossa Nova tunes from Antonio Carlos Jobim. For my more contemporary influences, I look to a lot of R&B/Neo-soul artists from the UK and Korea. Some of my favorite musicians these days are Tom Misch, Lianne La Havas, IU, and Sam Kim. Their melodies are just so pretty and have that extra sparkle that's missing from some artists in the States ✨
