Interview with Studio Assunção

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Mixing and mastering. Clients hire me to record, mix and master their songs, or they already send me the tracks ready for work.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: To think that I'm going to fix problems that should have been avoided in the recording. If you want an excellent mix, make sure you have made an excellent recording.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Is there a correction for this or that? It all depends on the recording, because it all starts with the recording. For some things there are solutions, for others a different way of using it, but for others there is no solution, you have to rewrite or even give up.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I like to give the proper coloration for each song, and make the person feel within the environment that sound proposes, so that he can understand the message that the song wants to convey.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Hybrid. In many ways Analog outperforms Digital, this is very obvious, but Digital has evolved so frighteningly that in some things you will almost or by no means notice the difference, and there are some detailed features in Digital that we haven't yet found in Analog. Knowing how to combine Analog and Digital makes all the difference, this is undoubtedly the best way to make any sound look wonderful.

  11. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  12. A: There is a Christian church in a city near mine, they have a project called "We are Church". In this project they help people who need emotional and spiritual support, go to schools and many other places, bringing friendship and love to those in need. One day they came to me to record live musics that their band composed. I realized that the environment and the situation in which we were going to record would not be easy and I tried to give some suggestions, until I postponed the recording, but they said that they just wanted to capture the moment and then remember it fondly. So I understood what I was supposed to do. After recording, they gave me the tracks and I started working on the first song, and despite all the limitations I had, I did my best and sent the first sample of the result to them. They said that they had no idea that it would be possible to obtain such a good result. After we finished the first song they released, and today they already have thousands of views on social networks. It was a very simple, but difficult job. Their joy made me even more determined to always do my best in all jobs, regardless of conditions.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My ear. I have a very developed relative pitch, since I have many years of experience as music, mixing and mastering, and in that time I developed the strong ability to understand each sound and frequency.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Bethel Music, Tenth Avenue North, Hillsong, Jesus Culture, Newsboys, Michael Brauer, Andy Wallace, Warren Huart.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: Some of the Equipment I Use: - Macbook Pro, 16 GB, Core i7 2.7 GHz. - Logic Pro X. - Plugins: Plugins Alliance (Brainworks Package), Waves Plugins. - Console/Interface: Behringer Xr18 with MIDAS Preamps. - KRK Rokit 8 Monitors. Microphones: Shure SM57, Shure Sm58, Akg D112 MkII, Shure PGA57, Behringer C2. - Guitar Pedals: Dyna Comp MXR, Fulltone Full-Drive 2 Mosfet, Ibanez TS808, JHS Mini Bomb Boost, JHS Morning Glory, Fire Ultimate Distortion, Boss DD20 Delay, Boss RV5 Reverb. Note: I only use high quality original equipment, including software and plugins.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I love rock, pop rock, blues and any style that has guitars with a lot of feeling.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Knowledge. Studying hard, and never stop studying is the best advice I can give. Study the type of sound you love, study the type of sound you want to make, and of course also study the types of sound that people love most today.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I would love to have worked with Michael Jackson, he was a very rich guy in knowledge and creativity, I would very much have had the opportunity to learn from him.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: The right color, the right ambient sound, and the right size and weight for each sound. I like softness in high frequencies, I try to avoid exaggerations.

  27. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  28. A: It's been about 10 years working with music production, more than 15 years of experience with guitar, for some years I also followed a career as a singer making several trips, taking my songs through Brazil, Portugal and Italy. Studying and gaining great experience in the Art of Mixing and Mastering, I have participated in several projects and obtained the joy of bringing fulfillment to each of my clients.

  29. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  30. A: A Macbook Pro, an Apollo Twin X, a Fender Strato American Delux, a box with cables (hahaha), and a Shure sm57.

  31. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  32. A: Before closing any business always contact us, and fearlessly ask all the questions necessary to answer all your questions.

  33. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  34. A: Could you tell me about everything you plan for this project? Could you send me songs or links that look like the result you want to get to? Are you aware of the Terms of Service?

  35. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  36. A: Realize that I made a song come to life and personality, making my clients accomplished with my work. It brings me joy.

  37. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  38. A: Rest assured that I will do my best to make your music sound as beautifully as possible.

  39. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  40. A: Copyright Music Projects, and Client Projects.

  41. Q: What's your typical work process?

  42. A: I often talk to the client a lot, before and after work to understand the purpose and sound of where we want to get to music, so it is much easier to have a happy and satisfied customer.
