Ainsley Adams on SoundBetter

2x Latin Grammy awarded producer, published songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and mix/mastering engineer. I have a fully equipped studio in Berlin and work with most modern genres.

HI! I'm Ainsley. I love great music and all aspects of the creative process fascinate me, whether it's writing, producing, looking for weird new sounds or the technicalities of mixing and mastering. I also play guitar, bass and a few other things. I'm particularly interested in working with and developing new upcoming talent.

I've been making music since I was a kid and involved in the business for over 20 years. I spent 5 years as an engineer at Kensaltown Studios in London, where I learned from some of the best (Sacha Skarbek, Martin Terefe, Jamie Hartman, Thomas Juth...), and got to work on a long list of projects for both independent and major label artists, including several household names.

I now live in Berlin where I run my own studio operation with my engineer. We have two rooms with amazing gear, great sounding instruments and everything needed to create music of the highest quality.

My work has been released by major labels (BMG, Universal) and is regularly heard on radio and TV. As a songwriter, I am signed to Peermusic UK.

Feel free to get in touch. There's a very good chance I can help!

I have recorded a few songs with Ainsley and thoroughly enjoyed his calm, creative, thoughtful and professional way of working. As a producer, he has the ability to give guidance without being overbearing, which is something I have come to appreciate a lot. He gives the artist room to do what he/ she intended to do, and then elevates the sound by applying modern production techniques, creativity and imagination. Highly recommended.

In over 15 years of working full time in music I've been in the studio with many engineers and producers, and I must say that Ainsley is one of the very best. His commitment to going the extra mile to make things sound just right is incredibly impressive, as are the results from a sonic perspective. Ainsley has a depth of knowledge that I've rarely seen when it comes to every aspect of recording, and to add to that he is a very creative producer, editor and is going from strength to strength as a songwriter. He's also a lovely guy. Encouraging, supportive and a great laugh. Book him!

I guarantee you'll be happy with the end result if Ainsley is on your team. Genuine, constructive, and engaged. Ainsley is able to pick apart ideas and put them into reality. Wether it's engineering or production I recommend Ainsley for your project, I'd be privileged to work with him again some time.

Ainsley Adams is a great engineer. He is easy to work with and he is not scared to suggest edits on the mix to get the best possible master. He’s done several projects for releases on our label, Subtempo, and we are really happy with the results.

Interview with Ainsley Adams

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I helped develop one of the biggest bands in the Valencian region of Spain. I wrote and produced 5 songs from their first album, and appeared in their very first video.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Yes! Freddie Dickson for vocal toplines!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Are we still talking about this? Both!

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: What's the best way to promote? By making something undeniably good. Focus on the music and the audience will come.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: I think a Ukulele would be the only appropriate choice. Maybe some Maracas.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: To work hard, be honest, and provide a great experience.

  13. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  14. A: I'm developing an exciting new act from Iceland.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: Meeting people and creating something meaningful with them.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: How important the little things are.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: That really depends.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Find someone who listens, is honest, fair and as excited about your project as you are.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Intuitive, inventive and meticulous.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I'd rather work with someone completely unknown, who has something special to give to the world.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Get a really comfortable chair!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Mostly orbiting pop and indie, with elements of electronic, rock and hip hop. However I'm always trying to push boundaries and be unconventional where I can.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I've been told I'm a good 'finisher' so if someone brings a powerful idea, I can highlight whatever is special about it and take it to its full potential, whether that is in the writing, production, arrangement or mix.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I know sound, have quite a good understanding of musical culture, and I like to think I have decent taste; so I try to pinpoint what the song is trying to do and enhance whatever those qualities are.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: It always starts with a conversation to figure out exactly what is needed. From there on, every project is different. For me the most important thing is to make sure that people are comfortable and have a positive experience.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: We have two acoustically treated studios, both equipped with ProAc speakers and some nice outboard. There is a lovely Yamaha U1 piano, and a range of great guitars, basses, drums and synths to choose from. It's a comfortable and inspiring space that sounds great!

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: There are so many great people out there doing great things that it seems unfair to choose a few, but if I had to then I'm a big fan of Andy Wallace, Sylvia Massey, Rick Rubin, Brian Eno... There really are too many to mention!

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I have a varied skillset which includes songwriting, playing instruments, recording, production, mixing and even mastering. I'm interested in the whole process from start to finish, so this allows me to adapt to whatever the client needs.

  43. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  44. A: 25 years. I started out playing guitar in bands, then got into sound design and producing. I dabbled in electronic music production and deejaying, was working as a live sound engineer, and eventually started working in various recording studios, mainly in London. I've also been involved in writing and teaching audio related courses for a university and helped develop various successful artists.
